I have stock Z51 tires, brand new set of KDW2 and a new set of Pirelli Corsa System R compounds. Next month I am participating in an event with track days around Road Atlanta, Drag runs at Atlanta Dragway and an autocross at Road Atlanta.
So, I have ran the Corsa tires on track and like them a lot, but they don't heat up enough to drag. Also too hard when cold for autocross.
I'm driving to event so which set should I run?
I have the KDW2's that I purchased for track days, they are very hard with a 300 treadwear rating. I have over 150 laps at Reno-Fernley and Thunderhill and these tires still have half the tread left. I did replace the front right last year after I noticed some separation in the middle tread block. It was most likely due to the fact that the air temp that day was 100 degrees plus and I ran the KDW''s at 28 psi front and 26psi rear, late in the day.
I just autocrossed with my Z51 (220 treadwear) tires last weekend and found that they grip much better than the KDW's, especially when the track and air temps are cold. AutoX doesn't permit the tires to get to temp on cold days
I hated the run-craps on my C5 but I must admit that the Goodyear EMT F1 tires on the C6 are pretty darn good... just expensive!
If you are going to just do one track day at Road America you might just try the F1 tires, they are pretty decent for both events.
I have no experiance drag racing with these tires. Best of luck and I hope you have a blast, sounds like you've got the receipe for a great trip.
THanks for the input! Last year I did all three events with the stock Z51 tires and I was very impressed. Just didn't know how they would compare to the KDW2 that I have also. Only other thing to consider is that I have the KDWs mounted on a spare set of track wheels and the stock tires are on chrome. May choose to loose a little grip to save rims.
