Default Drag racing the 6 spd auto

I'm headed to the drag strip for the first time with the new '07 Coupe. I'm curious how others do the 1/4 mile with the MXO 6 speed automatic transmission to get the lowest e.t. and highest MPH. Do you manually shift the gears with the paddles or do you put it in S mode and let it do the work? Also, what is the recommended launch procedure for this combination? Thanks for the help.

Glad to have another A6 racer!! I put the car in S mode for drag racing. LT1LS1(member) has also had some great success racing an A6. Some people by pass the waterbox, back into it with rear tires only and burnout like that before staging. I drive through most of the time and haven't seen a difference in my 60ft either way, but some have. Best I've gotten on stock run flats is a 1.9 60ft, but I stab the throttle right as the last yellow lights up. Some say to ease into it, I have to try that next time to see if my short times decrease. Have fun, be careful . I'd put the car in competition mode(TC off, AH on) to be safe. AH does nothing to slow you down unless you're going sideways.

Hey guys

I just got an '07 black on black Z-51 and was wondering where are the best shifting rpm points for each gear in s-mode for drag racing? Also, where are the lock-out/non-shifting rpm points? My last car was an Infiniti, so pardon my lack of race knowledge.

Thanks

Speaking about the A6 you are just need to find what works. I found bring up the rpms to about 1200-1400 rpms power braking worked best for me. Even with the stock run flats I run though the water box and give them a good spin to clean them off. That also seems to help my 60 a bit. As far as active handling on or off that is up to you. I run with everything off as our track crew is **** about fuilds on the track. With the A6 stock I have only had 1 run where the tires broke loose on the 1st to 2nd gear shift.

I put it in S, skip the water, TC off, and punch it. My best time was 12.7 at 114 mph (with mods). I experimented with the paddles, and no way could I come close to beating the computer leaving it in S. I tried brake torquing at 1200 rpm and had too much spin and "a little sideways motion". FWIW

My shift points have not been altered and I'm running a mild cam, headers, and tune and the car goes throught the traps at 6K RPM in 3rd in "S" mode....perfect.

I want to hijack this thread (just for a little while). Since all you A6 guys are posting, what do you think of your 1 to 2 shift while in S auto? Mine is way too soft and slow. Seems quicker if I use the paddles and hit the paddle at about 5800 rpm (Shift will happen around 6300 then).

At first I thought it was touching the rev limiter, but now that I have HP Tuners, it's shifting around 6400 to 6500 and I thought the rev limiter was set at 6600. I'm going to raise the rev limiter in first gear just for the heck of it because if it's cold out I have hit the rev limiter pretty hard when in the full auto mode.

My 2 to 3 shift always has been and still is pretty firm. But that 1 to 2 shift sucks!

Glenn I have had my car break loose on the 1st to 2nd gear shift in S. It seem pretty firm to me. I think the difference is when you shift in paddles you have a bit more delay and when it final kicks in it feels firmer. But I will say my fastest 60, 330 and 1/8 mile time was when I was in paddles. I screwed up the 2nd to 3rd gear shift and screwed the run up.

I wish my 2 to 3 shift was firm. Mine falls on it's face then picks back up. Have been at 12.9 and 13.3 and everywhere inbetween Tm I asume.

I do wish my 1-2 was a little crisper, but I can still break them loose in 1-2 and 2-3 , on the street and track. At the track, 2nd seems to pull somethng ungodly, which is great, wish 1st pulled as hard, but am not willing to risk the tranny. In paddle mode, 1-2 is almost unmanagable, the red line comes on soooooo fast.. got wheel hop at the track in paddle mode as well. I save it for the street now and go all "S" at the strip.

Change 1-2 shift rpm 6300-6350 depending on the temp works best for me.
