i dont know if this should be in general or here, but i went with here, since it seems more of a tech question. I was wondering, what the best way to launch an auto is? Is it better to hold the brake in, give it a bit of gas, and launch it when it hits about 4000rpm? Also, when doing this, i know i am destroying my brakes and tires, is there anything else which is getting destroyed like my tranmission or engine? I know this is prolly a pretty base question, but I just wanted to know if any1 could point me in the right direction, thanks!

Yep, this will let the converter flash a little and get in the power band quicker. Then spend some money and get a good 2800 stall, this will drop a quick 4 tenths plus in the qtr, vastly improve your 0-60, etc... BTW you are not destroying your brakes and tires.....
If he's holding to 4K then he may well be destroying his tires, as they are probably already spinning.
True, there's no way in stock trim that you can get the rpms up to 4k without the car moving forward and/or the tires spinning against the brakes.
But I do agree about leaving at idle for best results in a stock/near stock car.
once again, i'm new to all this stuff, but when u guys say idle, do u guys mean 'Neutral'? and if so, wouldnt hte car not be moving even if u rev it to XXXX rpm? cos doenst hte engine just keep running higher but the car stays in teh same spot? from there, i'm guessing that u guys are referring it to dropping it into D or S once the car hits a particular RPM and the car will launch forwards? also, wouldnt u be killing yur brakes and tires when you gas it while braking? or am i misunderstanding something? Thanks again!

dont know what your driving a4 or a6 i have an a4 leave car in overdrive leave at idle after heating tires of course. heat tires pull up to line stage bith lightds on the tree .keep foot on brake foot off gas at idle when tree starts down take foot off brake and give it gas same time hold to floor at finish line let off gas and gently slow down

When we say IDLE we mean IN GEAR (S) for A6 or (D) for A4 without giving any gas. In other words, don't hold the brake and press the gas as your tires will start to spin if the revs get high enough. NEVER rev the car and then drop it into gear.
we called this "neutral bomb" in high school.... pretty much what happens when you rev the motor and put it into drive from neutral....
blows up your transmission....

Just let car idle and when you get the light slam the pedal down.
Like this:
At green lift left foot off brake and slam accelerator pedal to the floor with right foot.
Important:
Before the run...
Turn TC OFF
At the track do a decent burnout first in the designated area by slowly feeding throttle with right foot while gently letting off brake with left foot.
Car will not move, but rear tires will spin, when you see tire smoke stop.
PUll up to the line and follow advice above.
For best acceleration on the street such as merging on to a crowded highway from a dead stop.
TC ON, slam accelerator pedal to the floor.
Without a burnout to heat the tires full throttle acceleration from a dead stop will often produce excessive wheelspin on the street, especially in cold weather or on less sticky streets with TC off.
