Good "How To" publications?
I recently bought the Helm's Service manuals. While they're not a total DIY guide I find they are quite informative if not downright essential for many projects.
The more I do the more I'd like my own lift. I went to a man's house last week to balance my car and get it setup better for the track. I marveled at how nice having your own in-house lift is. Maybe I'll check Barnes and Noble to see if they have "Corvette Mechanics for Dummies."
All joking aside, I'd recommend the Helm's service manuals.

I'll check out those service manuals. I also agree that a lift would be really great! I'm looking for one that is relatively portable so I can take it with me when I move to Texas in a few years.
The ability to do much of my own maintenance (particularly on a future track car) is really attractive from a hobby perspective.
