What's with this? Must you shift to 4th every time light comes on the panel? Engine boggs down. Dealer no help at all. What damage can be done to transmission? Can 1st to 4th be overriden? Thanks, Vincars.

Dealer is an idiot.
It is called CAGS (computer assisted gear selection). It helps save you and the rest of us money by allowing the Corvette to attain better mileage. I hated it too!!
Many here will tell you just rev higher and it won't interfere....good for them, that's not how I drive (at least not all the time).
It can be overridden very easy with a CAGS defeat. Many vendors on here sell it, like Zip for instance...order the Cags defeat, takes 2 minutes to install (you must get under the car) and forget about it! It costs about $20 and well worth it. The 1>4 light will still come on for a moment but you will not be forced to go into 4th!

First thing I did when I brought the car home. Good luck.
I rarely encounter it since the first 500 miles on mine. You get used to it. Go to 3rd instead. It doesn't bog down so much and if you're driving that slowly 3rd is fine anyway.
This light will come on when:
• The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169°F (76°C),
• you are going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and
• you are 21 percent throttle or less.
The 1>4 light will still come on for a moment but you will not be forced to go into 4th!
That's the best part, every time I see that light it reminds me that GM was clever enough to add the silly CAGS 1-4 system to avoid a gas guzzler tax and thoughtful enough to make it easy for us to defeat it.

When I was an underpaid Airman in the Air Force and when I was a starving college student I put up with crappy behavior from cars. I sure as hell don't now.

which means you can trip it while in second if you're not careful.
i've got the cags mod. so i don't know if it will lock you in second or not but i have tripped the light coming out of second.

Well, you can use the CAGS or give it more throttle or do what I did: modify your car and while they are dyno tuning it, have them defeat CAGS.

That's if you call it crappy behavior. I think it has taught me that if I'm going to drive like an old lady, I might as well save some gas and shift to 3rd instead. Even though I'm no longer a starving college student, nor are my kids, I still feel I'm not too old to learn something.

Hi Vincars, and welcome to the world of C6 ownership, and the Corvette Forum. As you see from the replies above, this is the best place to get all your questions answered.
And congratulations on choosing the MN6 transmission - those of us who have it think it is the best for the car . . . . and those with the A6 think the A6 is the best COMPROMISE for the car .

Thank you GM
I had it tuned out when I had my car dynoed. I seem to get better mileage without bogging with teh 1-4 shift. I don't think it helps with mileage in real life driving. Also, being able to shift when you want to is nice!
I think the 1-4 shift lock out allows the C6 to avoid a gas guzzler tax.
$20 will take care of it though
No, there is still a gas guzzler tax on the Corvette, but the tax is charged to the manufacturer, it is up to them to pass it onto the consumer if they want.
It does help reduce the tax as the tax rate is based on the weighted averages of the city / highway mileage.
which means you can trip it while in second if you're not careful.

I believe it only affects the 1-->4 shift, just like the indicator . . . indicates.

Sorry DarthStimpy, but you are incorrect. Check out the EPA WEBSITE and the LIST OF CARS BEING TAXED and you will find things like the armored version of the Cadillac DTS, and the XLR, and the Aston Martins and Vipers, but NOT the Corvette or the Z06.
