I'm trying to put on my borla rear-section right now....
For the life of me I CANNOT get the mufflers off of the stock setup.
I have the swaybar lowered, I removed the mounting brackets for the mufflers to have more room to pull the pipe off the h-pipe...
I can get the pipes to disconnect, but I CANNOT get the muffler out.
Is there a trick to this I dont see?
Do I need to remove/loosen the h-pipe for this install?
If you're trying to do with without a lift you need to the jack the rear end up VERY high to be able to get them out. They come out at an akward angle but they will come out.
Go ahead and remove the H-pipe, it should come on out then. I have done about 4 C6's and after fighting the first one learned to go take off the H-pipe first. Also on the A4's you have to bend tab that the fuel tank covers bolts to on the passenger side.
I would first try getting that tail end up as much as you can. The probelem with removing or loosening the H-pipe is that the ONLY place the H pipe can go is back.... and that will just restrict the movement of the tail section even more. You need more room between the axel and the underside of the car.
I have taken the stock off and put Route 66 on first, then removed them and put on Bullets. The hardest thing to get out was the stock mufflers. There is a twist and maneuver trick... and it impossible to desribe it. I just remember twisting about 70 degrees, and putting the tip way off to the side.
If you got the H-pipes off from the muffler section, then you are 70% done. Since the muffler sections takes a sharp turn up just after the H section, you can only 'pull' that muffler section back... and there is a restriction allowing you just NOT QUITE ENOUGH room to do so.
if all else fails, I think a Saws-All is about $75-$125.
I just installed a Flowmaster set. First if you haven't finished yet. Here's my 2 cents worth . I found that if you removed the bolts that hold the muffler rubbers it will make it easier to go to the rear further making it much easier to drop the mufflers down. Take out all bolts holding the exhaust in place. Its easy, take your time, wait till you are finished for that beer.
The Borlas are surprisingly civil, not quiet, but comfortable inside the car and I don't notice any drone. They they have a great sound while accelerating normally or aggressively.
Yeah, they do sound good.
Not NEARLY as loud as I thought they'd be...so I am quite thankful I did not get the touring version.
Any quieter and I would definatley not have been happy with this.
The sound is a little dissapointing because I come from the F-body world where most any exhaust makes the cars sound incredibly aggressive....vettes on the other hand always have a tendency to sound like crap. But this is passable.
And like you said...not having a constant droning is a good thing. I would gladly give up some grunt to have a nice ride in this car.
If you just put them on, I think it will start to get louder over the next month or two. I have the touring and at first couldn't hear much difference while driving. After about a month or two, something started to open up and it's been sounding nice since. If Borla stinger acts the same way, I think you will be grinning more in about a month.
