Default future project, adding 80-100 hp,need help!

I have a new 07,z51,6mn. I love the way the car handles, just want a little more power. My goals are, reliability, driveability, lots of low end torque. I want as much power under the curve as I can get. I'd like to get z06 power out of a ls2. I'm not trying to build a race car, just a real nice street car. It would be nice to get a 11.99 pass just once to say I did it though. I'd rather not add any weight to the car or deal with the heat soak of a super charger or turbo, so I'd like to stay NA. Not set in stone on that, but I'm leaning that way. So far all I have are flowmaster on, and a honker ordered. I know I will need longtube headers, and high flow cats, and tune. I need advice on heads, and cam. Some say go with stock heads, ported and polished, others say aftermarket??? Cam, from what I have read smaller is better, but what cam to get??? What else will I need? How much $ should I expect to spend? I want to be smart about this and do everything right the first time, so any advice you can give me would be great. Thanks!

You're on the right path. I've seen good results out of several heads. If I were buying for my car... I'd be looking at the Texas Speed head packages or the Livernois offerings. Seen both and am impressed with both.

I like the cheater style cams myself. Lots of guys get great results out of some 228ish cams as well, though. Definitely read up on some proven combos. Time spent reading is time well spent as a second cam swap is expensive!

Be sure to make room for another mod to feed the heads you select. Either port the stock intake for 10-13rwhp with a stealthy style or go all out and get the FAST intake and get it ported. Both are good... just depends on your budget.

I went with the L92/L76 heads/cam package from DTE and ended up with 460 rwhp and 432 rwtq with a very small cam. I am 100% happy with the results.
EDIT: Here's the thread they started about my car.

you know...vararam has shown results time after time in the 1/4 mile. Combine that with headers and a tune and you should be able to get your 11.99 without spending too much.

Neil,

I just went through the same issues. I went to CARTEK for their 2X package. I took the advice of many friends and Forum experts and did not piece patch parts. CARTEK has proven performance packages, what works well together in combination. I am convinced that that is the proper approach. Send a PM to Julian at CARTEK. Their sight is not up to date but good for a general idea of their capabilities. Julio is the best tuner on the East Coast. Dave will come up with a custom package to suite your desires.

I also think that Ported LS7 Heads are the best available. Look at it this way. With all the engineering experience and engineering knowledge at GM, how could a 2-3 design engineers at some race facility do better? It goes against logic.

Standing by for FLAMES JT

We've seen the gains you are looking for with our Stage 1 CNC LS2 Heads and Stage 2 Camshaft with other supporting mods; ie: longtube headers, x-pipe w/cats and cold air intake. We've seen gains of 135 + RWHP with our Stage 3R heads and Stage 2 Camshaft with stock intake manifold and throttle body.

Two examples can be seen in the following videos:

+100 RWHP

Stage 2 heads, Stage 2 camshaft

+132 RWHP

Stage 3R heads, Stage 2 camshaft

Both of these vehicles had great drivability and made great power!

My personal car (99 C5) picked up 120 RWHP with our Stage 1 Heads/Cam, LGM Lontubes & X-Pipe, LS6 intake, and Z06 TI catback.

Regards,

Any one else. The L92/L76 package from DTE looks nice, but I'm not very close and they don't sell the parts. The Cartek 2x package also looks good, as does the Liveruis. From what I have read the LPE GT11 cam works well for what I want.

The L92 heads have 225cc fuel runners. If ported they will increase to 230-240. That size increase lessens the fuel flow velocity that is critical to low RPM Tq. Yea you will dyno with higher RHWP but at the cost of 20-40lbs. Tq in the 2000-4000 rpm range. Nice for top end HR bad for the Track & low end Tq.

Ask Spin - he experienced it first hand when he went L92/L76.
