I got a check engine light yesterday and AutoZone said it was from a loose gas cap... I had already checked the gas cap and it was as tight as it's going to get. Anyone know what's causing this problem?
Did Autozone clear the code for you? If they did, has it returned? If not, I wouldn't worry about it too much for now, may have just been a fluke or glitch.

Had that issue and called my service advisor from the car. He said most likely picked up some crummy gas; use it and refill and drive somemore and sure enough ; a short time later no more light. That was several thousand miles ago and it never occured again.
mine did the same got the notice on the dash then the engine came on and stayed on for two days playing with the cap did no good, dam hard to tell if its on right! filled up put cap on light went off, go figure? get your self a set of helms manuals and a code reader, don't ask some kid at the auto parts store
this comes from personal experience. Yes, the light may be a fluke, but it could also be a problem. If you made sure you fil up and the gas cap is tight and it doesnt clear the problem in a couple days, then you may have a bigger problem. It seems that the light is detecting any air getting into the system. In my personal experience i had a air leak from a hose around the gas tank somewhere (is what was explained to me). So if you have the problem for more then a couple days take it into the dealer and get them to check it with a handheld monitor they use. I took it in at first they said ignore it, it will go away in a few days you prob put the cap on loose. I took it in a week later with the same problem, they hooked it up and it showed a major air leak in the fuel system. Anyways if you still have the problem, get it checked, its better to be safe then sorry
I have had a CEL come on for a loose gas cap. When it happened (twice) I also recieved a message on the DIC indicating to replace the gas cap. If you are not seeing this message, my guess is that the CEL may not actually be related to the gas cap.
interesting, my gas cap broke and would not tighten and the computer never threw any codes and i drove the car for a couple of days until the new cap was available from the dealer.
i went out and checked the color of the seal, and it is off-white (or at least that is what it looks like to me)

My 05 is green. Someone posted an hour or so ago that he thought the orange is for E85. So I guess the new revised cap is off white.
Here's an update. The light turned on right before i needed to fill up. I filled up the tank and cleared the light at AutoZone. I drove around for about 4 days and a 1/2 tank of gas later, the light is back on....

Dealer time?
As much as I hate to take my car in for service, I would say yes. You could try to call them up first and try to talk to a tech in service, if it is a common problem he may be able to find some info on it and book you an "in & out" appointment so you don't have to leave the car.

I also got a check engine light and took my car to the dealer. They told me that I needed to change the gas cap. Go figure. I only have 2,500 miles on the car. '07 MN6 3LT purchased back in May.
I bought one from Advance Auto Parts, and hit the "Reset" button. The light went off for about a minute. So I bought a GM one, and it went off for about 15 minutes then came back on.
So do you have to get the light cleared by a code reader, or is it something else? It's been on for about a week.

I have about 39k miles on my '05.
if everything is fine it will go out its self, but it will take a lot of starting, and shutting off , and driving it works by cycles. buy a cheap code reader less than a hundred bucks, clear it if it comes back and cap is on right go to dealer
