Who has driven a C6 with this 'auto' paddle-shift... and what are your thoughts?
Decent tranny, but there is a 1/2 second delay that drives you crazy when in the paddle mode. You hit the button and then wait for an eternity for it to shift. You better hit the upshift button at 5800 rpm (indicated) in first gear if you don't want to bump the rev limiter at 6600 rpm.
I very seldom use the paddles on the street. I do use them in Solo 2 events.
If you tune and learn how to drive it it is actually pretty good..
And this is from an old stick shift guy..
Drive both.. I use the paddles all of the time. If you only use it once in a while, you will never learn how to use it effectively and properly. (Kind of like you learned how to use a manual. you had no option other than to master it.. If you use the paddle ALL OF THE TIME, you will master it.)
I like the paddles though I don't use them as often as I should but I absolutely LOVE the 6L80 6 speed automatic transmission overall, it simply rocks and helps make my car very fast.
NO, it is not as fun to drive as a manual tranny, but it still gives you the opportunity to downshift and upshift to make your aftermarket exhaust sound better, that is important ot me.
Also, you never fear getting stuck in traffic.
I currently have 2 C6 Verts, a 2006 manual tranny and a 2005 with the A4/3.15 auto tranny.
The A4 shifts much harder than the A6, but I like the extra gears the A6 offers.
I do not like how in Full Auto mode you cannot keep the A6 from shifting in to overdrive and lugging, where in the A4 you can lock it so that it never goes in to overdrive.
I like it. The A6 is good for Houston traffic and using the paddles just takes some adjustment. Click it nearly a full second before you actually want it to shift and you have no problems.
I have it also and wouldnt go back. The delay on mine is only the first ingagement ; after that the shifts are right now. As far as the comment on lugging, if your going that slow you only have to think about it and the tranny down shifts, "engineering" along with 30mpg. I also track the car!

Yes, you are correct, it helps if you use them a lot. But no matter how much you use them it still has a 1/2 second delay when upshifting that can drive you crazy during an autocross. I've actually hit the upshift button, it hasn't done anything and I hit it again. Guess what, I'm now in third gear and completely wasted the run. It's not like when you are running a straight line, when you shift during an autocross you want immediate reactions.
I also agree with LS1LT1, the 6L80 is a great transmission. It would just be perfect if they could eliminate the delay.
I would bet the shift delay can be tuned out with HPtuners. Anyone that is in the LI area that wants to explore what is available as far as adjustment, I can read the PCM and look at what shift controls are available. It doesnt show this info without actually reading a A6 computer so I need a sample car. No adjustment will be made to your car if you dont want it. You can get a full tune out of the deal too if you wish. The engine parameters are no different to tune.

A very generous offer SpinMonster. Wish I have my 08 and was visiting LI. If you do get a chance to check this out I'm sure lots of folks here would love to hear the results.
Thank you for all of your input guys! I am flirting with getting the A6 but absolutely hate to hear of this 'delay' shifting sensation. To me that would be as annoying as a slipping transmission! If not worse...
Drive one before you dismiss it because of the delay.
There is supposed to be a software tuine in the next few months to shorten the delay.
Keep in mind that when you use your manual, there is a delay, i.e. foot and hand coordination delay. It was on another post that no human can do it faster than the computer.. Reset the shift points (HP tuners) and you will be shocked at the take offs...(in S or D)
I like my A6 tranny . The only time there is a delay in shifting is in manual paddle mode. In auto mode (S or D) the tranny upshifts smoothly and the downshifts will pin you back in the seat.
That is exactly how I felt when DCX was putting out press releases for the 1st to 2nd shift in my SRT-8. That only took about 11 months to happen and the first flash did not even fis the problem.
