Default 6 speed shifting problems!

I just had my transmission in my 06 replaced be the dealer and picked the car up late Fri. afternoon, just wanted to find out if there is a way to adjust the shifter, it is all over the place, 1st gear is so far over that I have to force it in, and 4th gear is where 1st used to be, 5th is all the way over where you would think reverse is, it is awful, I called the dealer after I got home with it and they say to bring it back in on Mon. I am wondering if there is a way to adjust this myself, I don't want them messing with my car anymore, I can't drive it like this, every time I take off, I am putting it in 4th by mistake because it is where 1st used to be, any help would be great!

Default they weren't finished obviously

another dealer repair fussed up. I know to change shifters you have to place the OEM in 4th, then take it out and then put another one in.

the dealer didnt finish. on them. If it was me make sure you take a pic of your console before you return it so if they scratch it up you get another one.

Suggest that the shifter cradle is askew. Here is a how-to for making the shifter cradle adjustment.

Alternatively, you can ask the dealer to readjust it.

I guess i'm just gonna have to take it back to them, I hope someone can tell me how to fix this myself, the main reason I don't want to take it back to them is because they already scratched the h*** out of it the first time and I don't want them messing with it anymore, there are scratches all around where the ride controls plate is!

Notice the second of three drawings in the link that Ranger gave you, above. There are three bolts identified -- two to mount the shifter box and one for the shift linkage clamp. From the way you describe the shifter action, I'd bet that shift linkage clamp bolt is loose.

To fix that yourself, do a search on aftermarket shifter replacements and find some pictorial instructions for removing the console panel and shifter -- there are several writeups that will show you how to remove the interior stuff and to expose the shifter mechanism.

If you find that clamp bolt loose, put the transmission in neutral, insert the locking pin (from Ranger's linked drawings) to hold the linkage in the neutral position, then tighten the clamp bolt. When done, make sure the transmission shifts fully into all gears. If shifting is not perfect for all gears, reinsert the locking pin, then loosen and retighten the two bolts that mount the shifter box. This will allow the shifter box to move slightly and will align the whole setup for the neutral position.

This is about the same job you'd go through to replace the shifter. In fact, if you want an aftermarket shifter, now would be the time to install it.

Good Luck.

Thanks for all the help, I went out and took the console apart and found that the shifter linkage clamp bolt was loose, I put the shifter in 4th and tightened the clamp bolt, that fixed it. Thanks for everyones help!
