Default Clearing codes?

I have some codes I want to clear. I have a code reader that will erase the codes but it says that the ignition must be on and the engine NOT running. Well how do we do that with the pushbutton start? I know how to get to acc mode, but that is definitely not the same thing as ignition on but engine not started. Thanks for the help!

Or, just take a battery terminal off for 5 minutes

Push and hold the ignition switch down (as in to turn off) for at least 5 seconds is the correct method. The other option given won't help with automatic cars.

The DIC will tell you that the ignition is "ON"

The other thing to consider is you really don't need to do anything. Once the problem that caused the code is corrected. After so many drive cycles the codes will erase themselves. Once the problem is corrected, it's normally a handfull of drive cycles without the problem present (maybe 3 or so) that turns off the CEL light. Then another number of drive cycles (maybe 40, it varies) will then automatically erase the codes.
