Default Clutch Fluid Missing!

Where in tarnation has it gone?
The fluid level is slowly getting lower under the minimum fill line.
No puddles.
2005 MN6 12,500 miles.

Possibility leaking inside the car under the carpeting? Hope you track it down.

Same here. 2006 C6 MN6 12500mi. Right at the min line. No signs of any leaks anywhere. Does this stuff evaporate due to clutch heat?

Well, that's a good question. We know that as new brake pads wear in/down, the fluid goes down. Not much, but a little. No direct analogy is drawn but .... I can't recall ever having a lower clutch fluid reservoir level in any car I've owned.

Mine was also at about 12500 miles and just changed it Saturday. Very low and very dark. Borrowed wife's baster and sucked it out what little was left and refilled about 5 times.

No clue where it goes.

Did you put the baster back?

Interesting.
Are you checking it warm or cold?

You have a leak somewhere. It can't be the clutch wearing because fluid returns to the reservoir as the clutch wears.

i believe this is 'normal' behavior for a system that has not had maintenance performed.

as others have said, the fluid will breakdown after time (half-life, etc.), the result of which will cause the level to decrease slightly. you can either 'top it off' or perform the more involved 'ranger clutch fluid change procedure'.

it is my understanding that gm recommends clutch fluid replacement every two years.

Um, that is the stupidest thing I ever heard.....just kidding for old time's sake.

Your leak which you do have is most likey at the slave cylinder and is only comming out a drop at a time due to tolerances, most likely. The slave is inside the TQ tube bell housing. There wont be any puddles since when standing still it wont have pressurized lines and when driving the drop of 2 wont get to the ground.

Look at the clutch housing area on the back of the engine and the will likely be a coating of fluid around that area. The lines for the clutch are all exposed outside the car (none in the carpet area) and from the bottom of the master to the top of the TQ tube where the line goes to the slave you can see the line and if there are any leaks. If there is a drip at the master connection, it may be dripping onto the frame over time and preventing you from ever seeing it. If you car has been losing a drip at a time for 2 years, it will never be visible. It can also be a loose bleeder valve or fitting to the slave itself. The bleeder can be accessed with the Tq tune cover removed and it requires a 10mm wrench.

Since the leak is that slow, fill it and plan on a new slave when you swap the clutch out in years to come. If you are dishonest you can just sit on the issue and sell the car when time comes to get a new one relaxing in the knowledge that it wont be your problem. I hope that isnt you.

Lastly, the slave comes with the hydraulic lines and repalces all fittings so for 175 bucks when you swap to a better clutch, it will all be fixed.

On jack stands it took me 8 hours to swap mine out. It must be roughly a year since I swapped out my clutch and slave and the fluid level hasnt moved at all.

I know, but as stupid as it sounds, it's true. For those that don't know (which doesn't include you Spin), because of the clutch release design, the "cylinder" retracts as the clutch wears causing the fluid level to rise if there is no leak in the system.

Speaking of which...either your clutch isn't wearing, you have a leak in your system, or you've been drinking from your clutch master cylinder reservoir...again!

No... I soaked it hot water and Dawn, but the soap must have reacted with the brake fluid because it turned a milky white. I will have to buy a new one and sneak it into the kitchen drawer. Thanks for reminding me.

Reminds of the time I used the kitchen oven to bake some parts I painted. Took a while for the smell to go away.

Someday, I have to start a thread about all the stupid things I or my family did. Like the time my father tried to clean a paint roller by soaking it with gasoline and spun it dry in an electric drill in a garbage can. It blew up like canon.

I just remembered that I, due to unfortunate circumstances, cannot make it to your house this Thanksgiving. Regrets.
