Default Thermostat Question

I was curious as to the purpose of the pin on the top of the Thermostat. I have attached pics below. I believe it is for venting, is that correct. I am just a technical geek kind of guy and I like to know how things work. Saw this on the new T-stat and was stumped as to its purpose. Thanks in advance!

I believe it is to prevent it from being installed upside down.

Researched it further and found out it's called a jiggle valve or air bleeder which is supposed to allow trapped air to pass through when refilling. Not sure if it prevents if from being installed wrong, I'll know next week when I swap mine out for a 160.
