Default Octane Boost....

Anyone using a Octane Booster?
Now that I have made the mods to the engine I'm finding that I'm getting a slugish responce from 2500-3200 rpm's, feels like poor detonation and maybe I need a booster. When I had the car tuned it had 93 octane in it and all I can get around home is 91..... Would this make a differance if so I'm willing to use a additive since my tuner is 300+ miles away....
What booster would you use?
Looking for help on this

If you have 91 octane at your disposal only, I would retune for 91 octane, the computer is retarding timing to eliminate knock due to the lower octane, hence your sluggish response in mid range. This could result in 25 -30 hp loss.. Good luck..

Ultimately this would be the best choice Just have to find the time for a 10hr road trip (round trip) and fuel up with 91 octane before I get there. I may do this but thought I would try the booster and see if my problems go away. Power loss is huge in this rpm zone Anyone know why it's better performance at the higher rmp range?

Definately re-tune to the lower octane gas. The only octane booster that I have ever used that really worked is Super104. However, you get what you pay for. If you want something that is going to work, you have to pay for it. That stuff was like $7 a can or so last time I used it. No telling what it is at now.

If they tuned it on 93, there is a hell of a lot more timing in it than there should be if you don't have 93.

I saw a good article on Octane boosters about a month ago. I can't remember where it was, but most Octane boosters only boost by 1 to 2 points. But get this, a "point" is 1/10 of what most people would think it was. So if it boosts 91 octane by 2 points, it goes to 91.2 octane.

You are much better having the car tuned for 91 octane.

I have a modded Ducati with high compression and have looked into octane boosters fairly carefully. Refiners control gasoline octane by isomerization (converting paraffins into branched isomers) and their higher octane fuels promote combustion. Most octane "boosters" simply provide Toluene or Ferosene. Both can slightly increase octane by slowing the burn rate of the gasoline, but they also lower the energy provided by the new mixture and can adversly affect combustion. High octane fuels normally yield less energy per volume of fuel but the boosters reduce energy more quickly than commercial gasolines. Some studies have shown octane boosters can also damage your exhaust valves and 02 sensors.

EDIT: Several of the major mortorcycle and automotive magazines have tested octane boosters and have NOT found them useful.

Torco works. The Unleaded 104 32oz. can will raise 10 gallons of 93 Octane to 104 Octane. Used by many modified boosted cars to allow stock timing settings and high boost without pre-ignition.

Bear in mind that you don't need 104 Octane, reduce the mix of Torco to 91 Octane to end up with 94-95 Octane. One 32 oz. can to a full tank of 91 Octane should give you 97-98 Octane. Makes the gas kind of expensive, one can to a tank adds almost a dollar a gallon!

You can always use Toulene from Sherwin Williams or avgas mixed with pump fuel if you are worried about detonation.

I've been running Torco for the last 5 years, with excellant results!! I became a distributor 3 years ago, and do it on the side for fun.

I sent out a sample of 10 gallons of 91 mixed with one quart of Torco to Core labs in carson. The ending octane # was 96.5.

If you mix one can of Torco in with a full tank of 91, you will be in the 93.75 to 94 octane range!!!

I've got a C6 on order, and will do a # of before and after Dyno test with Torco and a few other mods!!

Let me know if you want to try some,
Thanks,

JB

JB - mixing 1 can with 93 octane, what octane would you be at? Also, if your car is tuned for 93 octane, and you add torco would that make the car run funny?

If you mixed in one can of Torco with 18.5 gallons of 93, you would be right around 96 octane.

If your car is not seeing ANY KR, then adding Torco would neither help nor hurt you.
