Default Fob programing

I'm trying to program the 08 fob for my o7. I'm following the instructions and its SUPPOSED TO SAY" when you turn the key 5 times in 5 seconds the DIC says OFF- AcCESSORY TO LEARN." buy I'm getting, "ready for fob 3" then thats it. No fob detected. any ideas? Does the new fob need a battery of some sort? Its in place in the glove box with the buttons towards the passenger as directed. I'm pissed.

IIRC, I thought you were supposed to turn the key 5 times, get the message, and THEN insert the new fob into the slot?

(and yes, the fob needs a battery... I don't know if brand new ones from the parts counter come with one already installed or not... might want to pop it open to make sure..)
