Default Shifting into 1st Gear.....

2005/C6/12000,00 miles/6speed...I sometimes experience a hard time shifting into 1st. gear from a complete stop, usually only happens when I'm at a stop light. When this happens...I release the clutch and engaged it again, then it goes into first. Otherwise, it shifts fine. Any thoughts?

Thx.-G

Many members here have the same problem. Not sure if there is a fix or not, someone will chime in to shed more light on the subject.

It's a problem w/ '05s up to '08s I think. Not sure if they fixed something for '07, but it's never happened to me in mine. For '08 they ground the gears differently to prevent gears blocking.

Common problem. As I come to a stop on level ground I put the trans in 1st and then to neutral. If the car doesn't move you should always go right back into first.

I only go into first gear once I have come to a complete stop. Shifting into first gear while still moving is hell on your first gear syncronizer. That syncronizer is much like reverse in that 1 or 2 mph when shifting into it and it will be ok, but anything more is going to abuse it. My last car was an Evo and its syncros are pretty much crap from the get go. If you tried to go into first while moving, you could potentially grind. I never ground first gear one time when using the method I listed above and my car never had a tranny issue....ever. Not bad considering it was making 100whp more than stock. You will find it is also a lot easier to get into gear doing it this way than shifting into first while still rolling.

Thanks for all the comments...The dealership that I bought the car from also suggested that by releasing the clutch and then re-engaging it, should allow the shift into 1st.

At idle the car will go around 5 to 6 mph in 1st gear. If you shift to 1st at those speeds the syncronizer does nothing.
