Default Engine Cover Necessary?

I have an 06 C6 A6, and dont like the big plastic engine cover hiding the engine. Is it necessary for the engine to run or cool properly? , Or, what exactly is it's function? I just want to remove it and see the engine instead of this giant trash can lid hiding the engine. Than!ks

I thought I was the only smart person on this board!

Those beauty covers are there for just one reason and that's to cover up the ugly coils. I took mine off the second week I had the car. I like the look of an engine, not plastic covers. Plus, I have to believe that the engine will run cooler without those hideous covers.

Looks only, and like the other poster said it might run just a wee bit cooler.

All coil covers do is: (1) hide the coils; (2) trap excessive heat, so the coils will fail prematurely; (3) provide a place for purdy art work!

Take it off. If you think they are something, you sholuld see the monster GM put on top of my LS6 / CTS-V. Looks like a UFO or the moon lander....

I posted my results of removing these covers on the 'Too Hot?' thread a while back. My C6 is Procharged, with a FMIC. At a steady 75 mph cruise at 110F ambient, the car coolant temp dropped 3F. I don't know if the results would be the same with a non Procharged car, but you could try a test.

Mine came off the minute I got home from the NCM.

The covers are a caricature. They represent what people who don't know anything about engines think engines should look like, put there to impress people who have no business poking around the engine compartment in the first place.

Everybody's doing it these days. Time was, the hood was there to cover the engine. Now you open the hood and are presented with another hood, effectively -- except the second hood looks silly and is much more difficult to open.

No screws. Simple rubber push-pins into rubber grommets. Simply lift gently but firmly off. You'll see how the driver side cover slips over the braided hose.

Piece of cake.

Took mine off as well. Some of the painted ones, carbon fiber, etc. look nice but I'll take the cooler coils.

Surely there can't be much temp difference with or without. Sure is one ugly engine compartment with them off.

Our engines are fluid cooled not air cooled. The engine might cool down faster without the covers if the car were off, but during normal operation.....provided the combustion temperature is the same, the thermostat is the same and the surface area of the heat exchanger.....oooops I mean radiator remains the same, the operating temperature of the engine will remain unchanged.

Remove them if you prefer to look at ugly wires and hoses. Hey, I heard your home will use less electricity if you remove the outlet and light switch covers. Better thermal effeciency, thus less resistance in the wires

Better yet, remove the roof and let the hot air escape.
