ok so i intalled a vararam as my first mod. next i want the whole headers,x pipe/cats, bullet exhaust package. what i would like to know is...what exactly consists of a tune and why is it necessary? sorry, i lack in tech knowledge!
I'm sure one of the many "supporting" tuners will respond but I'll throw my 2 cents in.
These cars are designed to operate almost anywhere in any conditions. And to pass all the EPA regs and mileage requirements doing this. In doing this they give up on optimum operation of the engine. Well, optimum as far as power goes. You have to give up something to meet this or that or to allow it to run at high altitude or extreme heat or with bad gas. A tune will allow you to set the parameters "tighter" to conditions YOU actually see. A little more timing, a flatter fuel curve, fan come on sooner, etc. Even a non-modified car can gain from a tune. You'd be surprised at the difference in driving one after the tune. Don't get me wrong, the factory does a pretty good job considering all the situations the car may see in its life and the government restrictions placed on it. A "good" tuner can improve the experience.
OK,first of all,a tune is not necessary with those mods. The cars computer will adjust accordingly.A tune will however get you some more power that is lurking around in there.Strictly elective surgery as far as a tune goes with your mods.I have the same,headers,vararam,exhaust,160 stat. What a tune consists of is an adjustment of your car's parameters while under load (moving) and at idle.I'm not a computer/tuner guy, just a vette guy who's spends his money on that stuff!
