I have '06 base coupe. Haven't been able to find details about theft deterrent system in Owner Manual. I am most curious about how the immobilizer works. Would anyone care to enlighten me, please.

Secutity is invested in the fob. No fob - no computer. no computer, no fuel, electrical to the engine. Alarm is sounded when the vehicle doors, hood or hatch/trunk is opened without a fob present or key.
At the moment, we have a sophisticated system but technology being what it is, i wonder if our cars will be easy pickin's 5 years from now. If the RFID systems in the C6's are of the 40-bit variety, it sounds like it's getting easier to defeat. Let's hope GM spent the $$ to go to the 128-bit versions in our cars. (yeah right... like they did with the 05 Onstar analog units )
Remember, stock alarm is NOT shock sensitive thru 2007, don't know about 2008. I learned the hard way with a wheel theft..... I didn't even hear it happening. IMO you should install an after market one that chirps and goes off if the car is bumped, thunder, etc. It comes with an additional flashing blue led indicator if you want. The sensitivity is adjustable on mine so that on thunder claps you just get a couple of chirps.
For example if I go somewhere and park it in a parking lot, go inside, and someone tries to mess with it, the additional after market FOB will go off and I can go investigate.

You can test your car by rolling down the drivers window, take your FOB inside the house (I dont know if this is a requirement just my suggestion), reach inside and use the manual door release to open the drivers door. Your alarm (horn) should go off.....

Downside, now I have 2 FOBS to deal with
There are systems that work as addons to the OEM system also if you are interested.
I had my dealer bring in a guy who is experienced with the C6.
I wanted a shock sensor so if the window were smashed or someone hits the door it will sound the OEM factory alarm.
This is what the alarm guy said. " No need to go into the C6 Computers, I am going to install the shock sensor, when triggered it will turn on the interior lights making the factory alarm think someone opened the doors sounding the factory alarm."
I also had him pull out the OEM door Led's & install Brite Blue LED's & put a Brite blue LED on the dash grill as a deterrent.
Any deterrent is a good one in my book.
