Default Help ... False Hot Engine?

This AM, I got a message that I have a hot engine & the AC is turned off. Weird thing is I have no temperature reading at all (on dash gauges & DIC), good oil temp and no signs of an overheat. Also, when the car is completely cold (just started), I still get this message. Any ideas, guys? I am guessing either the temp sender is bad or wire to it is off. Where is the temp sender located on the LS2? Thanks.

Is it stock or have you added a 160 thermostat? With stock tuning and a 160 some cars get this message but the code is for engine undertemp.

I got the same error message once after shutting off the car but it was after driving in 90+ degree weather. The digital temperature was reading around 190-200. The weird part was when I finished pushing the engine off button and started to get out of the car, the electric fan kicked on all by itself and the ignition button lit up.

I have the car modded one of which is the 160 t'stat. The weird thing is when you start the car, for a split second, the gauge shows what I would expect to be the actual coolant temp but then the gauge settles down to zero with the Hot Engine message. Very strange.

I'll have it looked at this week (if the problem persists) and will post up any results.

Well, this beats everything! This is the first time I ever had to reboot my car. I pulled the positive cable, waited 2 or 3 minutes then re-attached. Temp gauge reading normally again. Welcome to the world of computer controlled, fly-by-wire cars! Is this darn thing running a Microsoft OS? I expect this may not be the permanent fix but ... for now it all is well.

It will happen again, the car is taking too long to reach op temp, and the ecm "does not believe it", thats why the gauge stops working after 3 mins.......If u run no thermo this will happen everytime. Posted b4 about this for someone....."temp gauge posessed"" or something. The stat opening to soon, get another 160 and try it.

Thanks for the explanation. Is there any easier way to reset things, short of pulling the battery cable? I would expect this would get worse once the weather gets really cold. Is this just the normal behavior with a 160 t'stat?

You just have to get your tune adjusted. With a scanner, find the code (sorry, I don't remember the number, but it will be for "engine undertemp") and using tuning software like HP tuners or LS2 Edit, disable that parameter.

Its a problem with having a 160 stat and cool outside air. Happened to me and freaked me out. I reset the code and havent had it back since. You can let the car idel up to temp first as I think this will allow the fastest warm up operation then going right out in coool air driving. Or put the stock thermo back in for winter time.

He is correct, u just "un-check" the box for that code. B4 hp was out for the e-38 controller, I used 2 thermos b4 it was happy. My box is still not un-checked and I even have elec. w/pump.

Good info, I have had the same thing happen to me the other night. Took off from a friends house (temps in the 40's), right onto the highway, a couple minutes later my coolant gauge was dead with the message "engine hot, AC off"

I was like WTF? I thought right away about the 160 t-stat in the car.

So is the way around this to just let the car warm up past 160 degrees before driving away and you won't see the message? Will it still freak out if it's under 160 temp for an extended period of time despite a warmup to 160+?

My tuner is in NY so that's about 2 hr drive if just a longer warmup will prevent it I'll just get it tuned out in the spring.

Well, u know in south Louisiana it only gets so cold for so long, so I don't have an issue. I can tell u that it can be 90 outside and if no thermo it will happen everytime. Happened to me early last year and I was like Threw me a curve for sure. Now that more people are modding u may see this a lot more.

Wow can I sympathize with you! I had the exact same thing happen to me. I had been at OBI early sunday morning of Labor day weekend. I was on Sunrise Highway in Amityville when I got that same message on the DIC. I was in a panic and having heart palpitations (lol). I had had the Vette Doctors work on my car previously. I was able to contact Carmen on a holiday weekend and he had me bring my car over to his shop. Turns out to be the same thing, car was running too cold. He reset the code and changed the temp the fans come on at and I haven't had a problem since. Vette Doctors really helped me out when I needed them most. Highly recommend them.

You know, I had them do work on my car back in August. Maybe I will run over there and have them tweak the programming on mine too.

Nah if it's running good I'd leave it alone. I wouldn't worry about it now that we know what it is thats happening. I was only worried because I had a mishap witha seagull that morning on my way to OBI. Kinda sucked for the seagull though. LOL.

Maybe your car is running Microsoft VISTA just like my new piece of crap tuning laptop.....

Thank god for Craigster05...Last night he came over and wiped that Vista crap off my laptop and now I'm back to "old reliable" XP.

Back to tuning again!

I just replaced my laptop 3 months ago, at the time so many bugs w/ hptuner using vista, so I told them I wanted xp installed on my notebook, not vista..........guess what? The SOBs wanted 200.00 more because "microsoft comps them 200 a unit to install vista" according to the salesman who had to get a superior on the phone as he was loosing a 2,000.00 sale! In the end I got xp w/ no upcharge, and guess what? All the new drivers and bug fixes are out for vista....now
