For the 2007 A6 has anyone looked into the cost of switching to the GMC 2.73 gears ( 2008 option) without any other changes. I do not know if this can actually be done.
Dont bother. The 2.73 at most gives you .10 at the strip, probably more like .05. You can pick up far more than that at less cost by buying yourself a $500.00 HP Tuner and just disabling TM "upshifts". That change alone picked me up at least .15 seconds.
Dealer said gears were $1,500 plus labor but they said GM would not give OK for software upgrade on the trany. GM says Feds tie their hands with making the after market mods. Not sure if I buy this but $1,500 killed the deal for me. DTE can do it all for a better value.
I have 3:15s with a tune and love them. SOP difference is huge. I am planing a wide body conversion so I can add some bigger meat to help with traction.
Anybody got the next step up? 3.56'S an A6? Chuck Cow seems to like this combo...Says is sick! Anybody got em? If so, how do you like it? Im trying to make a decision for Spring...

I consider 3.15's the way they should have came, and 3.42's for the agressive cars. Just my opinion, but the cars definately do not feel over geared with either of them, even in light F/I apps.
I always get the biggest kick out everyone hating the 2.56's and wanting to go to the 3.15's. If someone with an A4 came on and said they wanted to put in 4.82's in their car, they would be laughed off the forum. But that is exactly what the A6 with 3.15's is like, an A4 with 4.82's.
I still think the stock 2.56's are an excellent street gear. It's like an A4 with 3.92's so it's excellent for acceleration, but it's also great in 6th gear for cruising and getting stellar fuel mileage.
Well said!!! I had 3.73's in my C5 A4, and the SOTP around town was great.....the nearly 3,000 RPM's on the highway was NOT! Its one of the reasons that I got rid of the car instead of investing another 2K to go back to a lower gear ratio........I LIKE the 2.56's too -- best of both worlds, and with gas at $4 a gallon by spring, lower RPM's and better mileage looks better and better............
