I am confused I want to run the new MT 295/45/17 DR since it is closer to stock height, taller and cheaper.
So I see they make reproduction wheels in
18x8.5 56mm sit flush with the fender so will:
17x9.5 56mm sit flush or stick out 1" ?
A little more research shows the
18x8.5 56mm stick out 4mm past stock rears but fit in the fender
18x9.5 65mm stick out 8mm past stock rears but fit in the fender
17x9.5 56mm stick out 17mm past stock rears will the clear the fender with a 295/45/17?

C5 wagon wheel fronts are 17x8.5, not sure on the offset but I think they're either 54mm or 56mm?
I'm going through this exact 'DRs on a C6' dilemma now as well, I really want to use 16s though (I have the base C6 brakes) because I have spare F-body rims (I'd even consider the lightweight 16" CCW Classics if they'd fit) and a brand new set of the awesome new Goodyear drag radials but they just might not fit without grinding the calipers and/or using a spacer.
C5 base front wheels are 17x8.5's. I run 275's on them and they are right at the edge of the fender but never rub. Charts show 8.5 is too narrow for 275 but I've been doing it for years with no problem.
I would not run 295's on them. The 295's are super tall with a huge sidewall, and according to GTOdoug are squirrely on the highway - he likened lane changes to driving a boat. I can't imagine losing the inch of width (he runs C5Z wheels) would help that.
I want/think I need the hieght I think the 17x9.5 C6 repos will work if I can find a macine shop to machine 7 or 8mm off the mounting surface?
Anyone done that?
I was curious about the viability of that option as well.

And they fit with no caliper grinding or spacers needed?
What 16" wheels is he using?

The 16's work my friends Stock C6 a4 with only 16" ET streets and colder plugs went 13.5 on the motor and 11.4 on the spray 150 shot with a 1.58 60 foot both passes were made the same day and at 3,000DA.
My car runs 1.71-1.73's with 18x8.5's and 295 BFG's looking for the cheapest/most efective way to get from 11.1 to 10.999.
I would not machine off the wheels but that is just me. They are under a lot of stress, I've seen broken wheel pics on here butthose were repros not factory wheels.
I dropped .1-.2 going from tall ET Street bias plys to the very short 275/40/17 m/t drag radials. They are great tires, they will give you the gearing advantage and traction to reach your goal. My buddy regularly gets 1.4's in his C5Z06 with them.

i have said that for a year if you look close at the fronts and look at the backs the fronts are thicker than the backs thats how they made the factory offsets you could by the 10.5 repros that are 58 mm and mill to 65 mm. or go 9.5 and mill to 65mm on the 17"
