Is it realistic to think I can install Kooks headers in my garage on jackstands? With my two floor jacks, jackstands etc I can get the car approx 24" off the floor, which seems like pretty good clearance. I don't want to get half way into this and find I have a problem.
Bout to say....did my buddies 02 SS on jack stands and it wasn't that bad. The 2 of us got it done in an afternoon. So I know you can get it done on C6 with no issues.
can you comment on the tools needed. I do not have a wide selection, i will most likely need to beg, borrow, and buy.
The "beg, borrow and buying" is one of the best parts of working on your own car. I love to hear about people doing it themselfs on this forum! For me, working on my vette is one of my favorite thing about owning a vette. Good luck with headers, that will be my next project as well.

I did the install two weeks ago with the help of a buddy, absolutely nessary in my opinion. A selection of regular and deep metric sockets , torque wrench, are a must. I found the CO2 wrench helpful also. Things not mentioned in the instructions. I would remove the spark plugs this time. Easy but not mentioned you need to remove the dipstick guide and dipstick. I used hi temp anti seize. It is extremely easy to cross thread a header bolt. I used a disk with the 3/8" socket adapter to hand thread the bolts in, and they should hand thread easy. Be careful! My Kooks CO2 extensions were not long enough to feed up through the tunnel plate suggested here. I used the heat wrap, and not inexpensive! A soft dead blow hammer worked well for me in putting the exhaust components together. On my 07 A6, the passenger side manifold with the cat attached does not come out from below as does the drivers side. Stuck in the middle of the removal, I had to cut off the heat shield with snips to get the whole thing out. Disconnect the manifold from the cat section before removal. Start at the headers with all the bolts and work your way back. The Kooks bracket adapter to move the trans cooler lines up hardly moves it at all. I had to rebend the clip, and then had to still bend the lines to get any clearance . I know this sounds like a rant, but it is really not. I am not a mechanic, but enjoy a lot of equipment and tools I have, and consider myself pretty handy. This install would be much easier the second time around, and I would rather do it myself as there are no mechanics in the area I would really trust after all I have read. The Kooks headers and cats were great as far as I am concerned, but the directions are extremely generic and leave a lot out for the first timer. I am glad I decided to do the install myself, and don't be intimated by by the above. Take your time and you will be glad you did also.
Jackstands are fine - but be sure not to drop the last bolt We looked for 1 hour without results and then re-used an old bolt with a washer.
- Later the same week I found the bolt - it was stuck (and vibrating) in the center of the merge and I had to take the header off to get it out
I installed mine from below, but on TVs Dream Garage, MTI dropped them in from above.
