Default Rims for drag racing

Is anybody using a 17X12...or 16X12 rim on their car with drag radials or slicks for racing. I need something big and wide to get my power to the ground. any suggestions for a custom wheel manufacturer?

I dont think 16's wil fit without modification. I belive most are running C5Z06 front wheels, C4ZR1 grand sport offset rears or CCW. All with 275mm rear tires or clost to that.

Thanks for the info. I have 18x9.5 rims now that I use for drag racing with 285 drag radials but it's not enough. I was hoping someone had something made or something made. Looks like 17" rims might be the ticket

You might try and see if there are any 305's left. I put them on my 18x9.5s

I don't think you can go any smaller than an 18 inch wheel with the Z51 brake package.

I am fairly sure you can - my info came from Ranger. He recommended choosing a tire that would allow some wheel spin to prevent glazing the clutch.

The minimum rim width is listed as 10" but a 9.5" should be acceptable for most applications. Though after seeing the pics above of the 305x18 M/T DRs (with the sidewall of the tires a little 'sucked in') on an 18x9.5 makes me wonder now.

Most 17s can/will fit a stock Z51's brakes with some minor alterations, some are a little more difficult than others but it can be done.

I can't see the 305's on 9.5" rims giving you any more tire contact on the road than the 295". Just because it's bigger doesn't always make it the best choices for traction on the track.

The tire sides start to roll the sidewall and edge of the tread over on the sides. It puts more force on the outside edge of your tires and not over the whole tire footprint. Same thing with air tire pressure. To much air pressure in your tires puts more force on the center part of your contract point and not over the whole tire, not enough will make your have more force on the outside off your tires. Everyone has seen it at one point or another. Just look at how your tires tread looks. Is it wearing out faster in the center or outside of the tires. If wear on one side of the tire more than the other you got other problems. I think you would have been better off with a smaller tire but again MT doesn’t make one in 18”s that would mean you would have to use a Nitto or BF T/A Drag.

I have new rims for my Z06 and I went with 18x10 front and 18x13 rear. I’m stuck waiting on MT to get there stuff together and get some tires on the market. The company that makes there tires closed one of there plants and MT is moving there whole line from one plant to another. I’m not going to see 345/35R18 tires for 3-4 months yet. That sucks

Where did you buy your 18X13 rims? Do they look like stock chrome zo6 rims? Sounds like they are the rims to use as soon as MT makes the 345 tires. I'm running 19" 345's run flats on the back now.

Any more info on what 17's fit?? I asked Dave to try to find some rims/tires before I pick the car up....I don't know if he found anything yet.

You can go buy cheap knock off ZR1 rims 17x11 rims and put on 315/35/17 drag radials. Its shorter than the stock wheel diameter. So it will spin easier and hook.

I know Dave had actually used a 17x9" Trans Am WS6 wheel on their C6 Z51 early on but it still took some very minor massaging to fit.
You're also getting those new brakes (I saw them on the car yesterday when I stopped by the shop ) so you have to make sure that any 17" you choose clears those too (they should).
CCW does now have a 17" rim to fit the C6s but the M&H drag radials that they sell the package with are HUGE (28.51" tall).

i see you have the zo6 rear 1/4's and its going to take a wide rim to fill em up. i have the z 1/4's as well as with z51 brakes and they clear. bought 2 zr1 17x11 wheels
(56mm 0ff set) and mounted 26x 11.5 mt et streets. they fill out the wheel well nicely, but looks silly with them on the back, with my 19x11 ccw's on the front-but they are effective.
give me a few days and i will post pics.
