I had the same sound; turned out to be the differential clutch packs, in need of some new fluid and LS additive. Didn't want to believe it at first, but that put an end to the sound! The sound seems to be coming from the front, but it is not.

Samething with mine... What it is, the Tire rubs against the Shock housing tube. Remove tire and you'll see your prize. It doesn't seem to cause any damage to the wheel or tire though

The identified problem is the rear differential clutch pack which requires a gear oil and additive change. I also have an A6 and the noise is when the differential is cold and while you are making a slow turn. Seems the majority has and does give the thumbs up to Amsoil.
Amazing, Amsoil seems to have done its magic. Put a few miles on today after changing the rear lube to Amsoil & posi additive, usual scraping sound while turning & backing into the garage went away. This worked, so might try Royal Purple in the trans next

I have the same problem as mentioned above and it is NOT the clutch packs. I have had the clutch pack problem and solved by using Amsoil. This new problem that I am experiencing involves making slow left turns, for example when backing out of a parking space. It almost seems as though the tire is binding on something and I get a slight jerking motion. The problem only seems to happen when I am making a very slow left turn. FYI my suspension is stock Z51, stock height.

Why would this only happen when turning if it has nothing to do with the steering mech?
