Default '08 6-Speed Drive Train Slop?

All,

Having moved from a C5 to a C6 recently I'm trying to determine whether some things I'm noticing are normal or not with the drive train?

In this post: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1888521 I've described a slight fore/aft shifter movement when loading/unloading the drive train (like while moving slowly, 10mph, in first gear)

Having thought through possible causes my mind is now fixated on the noise that is made when rapidly engaging the clutch (i.e. quick pedal release). My C5 used to make some noise, of course, when rapidly releasing clutch but this '08 seems to make substantially more noise when quickly releasing the pedal in neutral.

Is this typical for the other '08 owners out there? My fear is that there is some abnormal slop in some drive train splines (or other??). Your input is greatly appreciated as I need to put my mind at rest about this one way or the other (nooooooo.....I don't want to go to the dealer ).

Honestly, mine shifter doesn't move around at all, to my knowledge, when I load/unload the drivetrain. I would consider myselft a pretty observant person, so if it did move a lot I would almost immediately notice it. As for the noises, no comment there as I never had a C5. There is a lot of noise coming from the tranny when I engage my clutch and when I shift into neutral and release the clutch pedal, but nothing that would seem unusual or "wrong" IMO.

I have an 08 and notice both of these characteristics, but have not owned a previous model for comparative purposes.

I took mine in today to have it looked at for the same slop and the dealer said it was normal for the new 08 setup, and they also compared it with other 08s on the lot. Nature of the beast

What is new in the 08 that would cause this.. sounds like more dealer BS.. Same as previous years except for the T6060.. which is not much different than the previous tranny.
I don't notice any slop or unusual noises.. My C5's made similar noises when the clutch is let out in neutral.

Thanks all for replying. This is exactly where the forum shines and thats the ability to query many other owners on issues like this.

On that note, after further investigation it appears that the fore/aft shifter movement is only present in first gear. Yeah, its a lower gear which could in theory amplify the problem but even after trying hard to load/unload the drive train in 2nd or 3rd it won't do it. Seems like there is something related to 1st gear going on here.

Anyone else care to chime in on their car?

Thanks a bunch!

I did it in first gear.. you have the ability to accelerate the engine faster in 1st .. so you have more radical movement of the components in the driveline.. More initial shock. You get more movement and lash..
I did not notice it at all.. you must be scrutinizing it and picking up on very small amounts.. or maybe something is loose.. you got softer bushings or something..

Wish I wasn't feeling it but it is definitely moving and not just a little bit.....unfortunately. Maybe the shift **** is moving .05" total runout.

Well I'm in in Anchorage (brrrrrrrr) and my '08 is in TX so I can't check it out. The fact that I never noticed the shifter movement means it probably does not move much.

My C6 does make the same "marbles in a can" noise that my C5 did, but it doesn't seem to do it as easily. It takes more of a clutch dump to invoke the sound in the C6.

Maybe you could shoot a video of it (the shifter movement), post it here, and we could compare to our own and let you know if it's about the same or worse?

I have a 06 c6 a6 and the slop in the drive line is getting louder with more "thumps" especially when putting from "r" to "d". Dealer said it was "normal" drive train slop and noise. It has quieted down lately, maybe because clutch packs were just changed out a few months ago. I even noticed the whine, wavering noise from the diff is even quieter now, there was some cupping and wearing of the inside of rear tires. Seems that sticking clutch packs were wearing tires. Things seem to be improving, maybe; beginning to think more things were related to the clutch packs that GM would not replace until third (3) time because of the "delay bullitins" - bring in 3 times for fluid and additive change and then we will replace out. This took 16 months and 17k miles out of 21 months the car was old. I'm very negative about the 06 c6, problems with transmission cooling hoses, crank sensor, defective shifter, rattles (been to factory three (3) times and they could not fix it - hadn't heard anything like it and it was on digital recording which really opened their eyes. They admitted that I had a bad problem car. Now I know why I hadn't bought a GM car in almost forty years when that is what I basically bought. This car is .

I have this same issue, I have been to the dealer at least seven times, been accused of abusing my car etc. After complaining that such an expensive car should not be so sloppy, they took it all apart. What they came up with was the input shaft from tq tube to trans was bone dry. That was the issue with the clunk sound when engaging the clutch. Unfortunately, I never complained about that. My complaint was about the loose almost bounce feeling when letting off the gas or just barley engaging the gas. I have no doubt in my mind that this problem is not normal. My theory is that the trans and engine mounts allow to much movement and that causes the bounce feeling along with a lot of noise from all the spline shafts taking up slack. I have bought driveline coupling hoping that was it, but that was not it. I have ordered pfadt mounts for the engine and trans. I will keep you up to date if it helps. Good luck!

I kept the stock motor mounts, but put in Pfadt trans mounts. Tightened things up tremendously. I was going to do the motor mounts, but I daily drive my car and was told it might be a bit harsh for daily use.
