Default Removed cats?

Hello,

Has anyone with a C6 removed the cats? I am planning on doing this perhaps sometime this week. I just had to see if anyone else has done it and how the car sounds or if it smells at all? Would it pass emissions? I don't want to see a post showing the penalties for doing this. I just want to hear from the people who have done it or know someone with a C6 that has done it. I have a magnaflow exhaust BTW.

I will be running no cats in the future on LT headers but right now its just stock. Will it smell...yes. Also I'd say prob. only a few decibels louder nothing extreme If you plan on taking them off your stock exhaust headers/downpipe or whatever. Don't its a waste of time. Just leave them on till you get some LT headers.

hehehe...not the smog police here, but I highly doubt you would pass emissions without cats and without a tune . Even an idiot inspector with a very dirty mirror under your car would see something was amiss. Its one thing to fool them with Hi-Flo cats, quite another when AWOL

I did remove it from my Porsche Turbo and had no smell. It really sounded great with a lot of off throttle burble. But it was a very rare car which was exempt from the smog police.

It will be louder and a bit more raspy. It will smell, and will not pass emissions.

I run without cats (and without mufflers or resonators either) and when I had no cats and a b and b exhaust that baby was loud. My car stunk of gasoline if you got behind it before. Now with straight pipes I have had people say that my exhaust has made their eyes cry.

To answer your original question: No you will never pass emmisons, yes they will stink but it wont bother you after awile personally I like the smell. You might even shoot a flame or two when you shift I did when all I had was resonators and my afr ratio's are all normal.

Cars didn't have cats until 1975, if the smell didn't bother you then it won't bother you now if the car is properly tuned. If your state requires an emission test leave them on, if not remove them and enjoy better sound, flow and power.

I don't remember any smell in my cars, prior to 1975.
It must be something different in the gas.

I think there might have been a smell but all the cars smelled that way and everyone was used to it. You could tell the engine was burning gasoline but people didn't have to change their clothes after standing behind a car as one person stated on the forum. Younger people are so used to the almost zero smell of a modern catted car that when they are around an un catted one they complain.

I would assume that a cat less vette, running in closed loop (idle or off idle) with properly functioning O2 sensors would not smell any worse than a 60's muscle car. It should smell less since it has a modern accurate fuel metering system opposed to a gas dripping mechanicaly controlled carb.

I'll have a personal comparison soon as I am installing headers with no cats as soon as the weather warms up.

The smell on my car wasnt SO bad on my car when I had the headers no cats and resonators. But when I cut the resonators out thats when it got really bad but like I said you get use to it I enjoy it.

I called the exhaust shop and they told me they would remove that cats, but they don't encourage do it because it takes away performance. (Because of backpressure) And it makes the computer system go haywire and cause a check engine? On top of that he even told me it will make the car sound like crap. I'm starting to think twice about doing this.

Wow I cant believe you found a shop to do it thats really illegal. First they will give HP it's a common misconception that there there is a thing called too little backpressure. Less backpressure will give you more HP (good) But it will also move your peak torque alittle higher (bad) I have personally installed and dynoed 4 cars (VR6 Jetta, SRT4, M3, LS2 Vette) with just pipes nothing else on the exhaust and they all saw an increase in HP over their respective aftermarket exhausts. The way your car sounds is all perspective personally I love the smell of gas and the louder the car the better it is for me, But i'm 19 i've had older guys say my exhaust sounds like crap due to noise. Yes you will get a check engine light and no it wont screw up your computer I had the check engine light on for 6 months with no problems before I had it tuned. I even took it to the dealer three times to make sure.

Sorry bout the long post good luck.

I don't agree on the performance and sound but they are right that it will throw a code/light. However that can easily be taken care of.
If you are not going to put headers on just taking off the cats is a waste of time. Save up your $ and get headers.

I can't see how an exhaust shop can say it takes away performance. Maybe they should go for a ride in my car, I think I can prove that theory wrong. I also thought it was illegal for an exhaust shop to remove the cats. I don't think I would just remove my cats without installing headers and an off road x-pipe. As far as the car sounding like crap, man he has no idea how wrong he is!!!!

Yeah it's really illegal like a $10,000 fine down here and florida is one of the most relaxed states when it comes to emmisions.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll probably just wait until I put headers on then take the cats out or put high flow cats on. I just wanted to get a bang for the buck upgrade that improves sound. But I really don't want to make people's eye's behind me water up. What if it's a 9 year old? or better yet what if it's a chick that i'm hanging out with that follows me on the highway or something?

I'm young too and think a louder car sounds awesome. Me being the impulsive person I am, I'll probably drop by one day and get them removed because i'm bored. If that does happen I'll post up what I think about it. Again, I really appreciate the info from you all.

Get yourself a set of Kooks headers, Kooks off road x-pipe and Borla Stingers. You will have to tune your car when you get the headers, but it would be worth every penny!!!

Well I got bored of the magnaflows and removed. I didn't remove my cats... When they started it up after finishing it sounded too good to be true. I should have done this mod a long time ago. I was thinking about running straight pipe temporarily until I could get B@Bs but I may just leave it the way it is now. The only thing I was worrying about was drone, but it's not as bad at all. It feels good driving it now.

With my setup, Corsa Sports, KOOKS w/offroad x-pipe (no cats) I do have drone at 1700rpm. The sound is simply ferocious, but if I had to do it over I would install high flow cats due to the odor that penetrates clothing and skin.
