It is also against the law. (Federal felony)

Just to clarify what others have posted: Yes, it is a federal offense for the exhaust shop to remove any emission related item. It is also a federal offense if you do it yourself.

There is just no logical reason to do this on a street car. The sound is brash and untuned, you stink where ever you go, your rear O2 sensors are going to light up your DIC like a Christmas tree, and there is very little performance to be had over high-flow cats. If you didn't already know these aforementioned characteristics, then you shouldn't be messing with the cats.

Stock performance would be down because the car was built and engineered to run with catalytic converters. On a modified car, there may be some gains to be had, but very minimal.

I really don't understand why on this site we are not allowed to discuss street racing but yet we're allowed to freely discuss the best way to commit federal offenses.

He didn't exactly say he wanted to do this to drive it on the street. Regardless I don't see why an open discussion on this shouldn't be allowed. Alot of other people like myself may use their car 99% on the track. So it would be good if anyone could show any real numbers of the difference between cat and no cats.

Also, you can not legally move the postion of the cats from the stock location. Rear cat DTC codes are easy to trick or shut off, but a under car inspection will get you a failure and maybe the fines.

Why just pick on cats. You should mention that ANY modification to an emission related component is the same felony.

That means no discussion on this forum of changing cold air intakes, MAF's, intake manifolds, headers with or without cats, Z06 exhaust manifolds on LS2's, heads, cams, injectors, adding superchargers or turbos, etc and a Tune of any kind.

The forum would have to reject half or its sponsors and advertising.

It would become really boring around here. The more interesting threads would be "I'm picking my new vette up on Friday" or "I just put my second coat of Rejex on" or "My nav disc does not show my house"

Since the first car rolled off the assy line hot rodders have been modifying them. A rarely enforced/prosecuted law on private citizens will not stop it. Even in states with testing people cheat, some to the extent of reinstalling stock parts for the test and then putting the mods back on as soon as they get home.

Many vette owners on this forum are hot rodders and will be till the day they can no longer pick up a wrench or the government goes house to house confiscating illegal vehicles.

My advise is get used to it.

just tune it to disable the o2s. cut the cats at factory welds. shove pipe through them. Weld back up at factory welds. Its real easy and looks stock. No codes. If you don't like broken laws, don't ever exceed the speed limit in your car. Don't pee in public. Don't tear the label off your mattress. Pay your taxes on time. Don't have two glasses of wine at dinner and drive home. In fact, vote for some more laws so that we become even further from being the land of the free that we proclaim that we are. I need another stop light right by my house. Can you help me out?

In California, they set up these like smog check points on freeway on ramps ect with a camera and 5 gas. If you roll buy this thing with no cats they will bust you. I was told if a cop sees you have removed any smog devices removed they can actually impound your car.

For the sake of smelling good for a date everytime I don't think I'll be cutting out the cats. The magnaflow mufflers I had were also "an alteration to emissions". But I've stopped and talked to many police officers and they said as long as it doesn't sound like s*** they have no problems with aftermarket exhausts. But if a LEO wants to give you a ticket for something, he'll give you a ticket regardless of what type of exhaust you have.

You are right with random road side checks and operators who know what to look for us modders would be screwed! I thank God I don't live in CA. Great weather and beautiful land but some of the laws.

I just did it, I like it, not that loud at all, nice little burble while idle. Smell is not bad at all. I'm in Florida so emissions is no problem.

Unburned fuel is one of the absolute worst things for our enviroment. I don't get why if your not racing, why you would do it. That extra horsepower is unusable on the streets.

To answer your original question: No you will never pass emmisons, yes they will stink but it wont bother you after awile personally I like the smell. You might even shoot a flame or two when you shift I did when all I had was resonators and my afr ratio's are all normal.
no cats...exhaust smell is a little worse and the flames are cool at night.
