Default Yet another Header thread!! Questions.

I am contemplating doing LT headers on my 2008 z51 A6 coupe but I have a few questions.

1. I understand you lose a few HP from running cats but if you don't run them do you get out of the car smelling like gasoline?
2. Can you legally run a car in Texas (or any state) without cats? If not how do people pass inspections every year?
3. Who here has had ANY warranty work denied because they had headers installed? What were you trying to get fixed? I know some dealers don't care but what kind of work could they deny because of headers?
4. Will ALL LT headers require me to get a tune to disable the rear 02 sensors to keep the CEL from coming on? If not, is that what the 02 extensions are for?

Car is still very new and I would hate to do this and have something go wrong and be w/o warranty...just paranoid I guess. I tried a search but the search feature on these boards is definitely no Google search.

I think you mean LG headers.
I just ordered a set and had many of the same consirns your have.
I would get the cats, from what I have read, without them you will smell like gasoline, and your date also
Im having mine installed at a Chevy dealer so there won't be any warranty problems. But there only consirn was the CEL. My service adviser told me I could get a C Reader 4 to turn it off if it comes on. They are about $60.00. But according to LG it won't be a problem.
A tune is optional, Im going to go without at first, and decide later if I want it done.
The dealer will also hood up the O2 sensors, and I think most mod shops would also.
Hope this helps

Mike

I am almost afraid to ask how much the dealer is going to charge for a header swap...

Do you mind if I ask how much?

$300.00, I know a mod shop would be lower, but it worth paying a little more for the warranty.

The warranty pretty much depends on the dealer. It could range from them installing it and still covering you to them completely denying every aspect of your warranty because of it. And everything in between. Some people will start quoting the Mag Act but don't buy into that BS. While everything it says may be true, the burdon is on you to convince the courts. Most people don't have the time or money to fight a team of lawyers.

Your best bet is to give a call to some local dealers that you trust and ask to speak with their warranty rep about it. If they say you'll lose your warranty, try another dealer. If they say it wont effect anything, try and get it in writing.

No, LT meaning Long Tube. I would get cats if I were you. The power loss is in no way substantial until you're making huge HP numbers. I think I was quoted a 5-6rwhp loss w/cats on my build.

You may not need a tune, but it's certainly worth it. A stock car can benefit from a tune, so a modded one even more so. It's not just to delete the CEL codes.

That isn't near as bad as I thought to be honest with you. If I go with the headers I will look in to the dealerships for the install. Thanks for the info.

So nobody here has been burned on warranty work specifically because of the headers?

A little TTT action for the night crew.

Good question. It is my understanding that it is illegal to run without cats, in any state (Federal law). It is also illegal to change or move them in a new car, so I have always wondered how so many people can get by with them on newer Corvettes!?

I have the LG Pro Longtube headers on my car. LG put them on about 1.5 years ago and also did a cam and a couple other mods. I did not have them install the hi-flow cats at the time of the original install. I like the setup, but it did produce a strong odor in the garage or any other non ventilated space. Yes it is true you will smell some after driving it. I don;t know if you ride a HD but driving the car without cats and riding a HD will give you the same smell.

I live in FL and had RevXtreme put a set of the hi flow cats on the car last week. I am very pleased with the result. it has taken the edge off the sound of the car and stopped 90% of the popping on decel. Before the cats and with the Corsa sports it sounded great but loud and had a blat type of sound at high RPM. It also had a large amount of popping in decel. All this is now toned down a bit and best of all it doesn't smell anymore.

I would get the cats unless this is purely a track car.

True, when someone says LT in reference to headers it's generally a shorter way of saying Long Tube(s).
