Default Tires

After 11k miles on my c6 with Z51 handling package, I need new tires. Replacements are Eagle F1 SuperCar at $400+ each for the front.

Dealer told me to stick with the runflats as non-runflats can damage the sensors that measure the tire pressure for the tire pressure indicators.

I don't race and like a relatively smooth but sporty ride.

Anyone have good experience with an alternative to the Eagle run flats?

Thanks

the only way non runflats can ruin your monitors is if you have a flat and the tire contacts and breaks the monitor. In that case, just buy a new one for $40. For normal use, they won't damage them. Right now, tirerack has the rear non supercar EMT F1 on sale though.

i would go with non-runflats. Better handling, better traction, better ride, and less money has made this an easy decision for me in the past.

Run flats can save your bacon.
A blowout at speed and youll be glad you have them.
A real possibility these days with all the road debris out there.

I need new tires too. Going with supercars again.
The performance (I rather regulary see over 1 G on the HUD)
and safety of run flats are the deciding factors for where I live-
Roads are good, doesn't rain much.

I was in your same position last May and went with the Firestone Runflats.
I remain very happy with those tires about 4K miles later. Much cheaper and performance is fine.

Just out of curiosity Zigmund what kind of P.S.I. did you run in those tires? Recommended 30/30? I am watching these strings and wondering best P.S.I. for mileage for this same time. Forget the ride comfort at this point. I can change back to comfort/recommended P.S.I. anytime. Thanks

Default Super Car Tires

The dealer set them at 27/28. Hyped up the Nitrogen vs air feature.

On rough roads and high speed (80++) I don't like the vibration. On smooth roads and high speed they are good.

I just replaced my F1's and did a lot of research before doing so. I came from an RX8 (no spare) and went to the vette. The security of the runflats was nice however, the ride was pretty rough and there were not as many choices for replacements. I also know how to plug a tire and if I had a flat from either tire, I would still be visiting a dealership. Pros versus cons, I bought the Nitto Invo's, Slime kit http://www.slime.com/index.php?p=faq#answer_1111_loc and a plug kit. As far as the ride, I have driven approx. 1000 miles and they are much smoother and quieter and absorb a lot more of the bumps. I have heard some people complain about the tire flex with the Invo's although to me, it seems like I feel more of the road than I did before. The wet traction is great (Florida driving) and the dry traction is fantastic. The F1's were a great tire in the beginning but got extremely hard as they wore. They also were never great in the rain so speaking of safety, the Invo's were a much safer choice considering that I drive in the rain much more often than I have ever had a blow out.

My top choice would have been the Eagle GS F1 D3 but the sizes weren't available. Between the www.tirerack.com and www.discounttiredirect.com there is a lot of information out there to help you find what is right for you.

Last note, I did have my tires filled with Nitro and at first I was thinking that this was just hype. I just said yes since I was already spending some money, why not a bit more. The air pressure was set at 36 PSI and what I have noticed is that the pressure doesn't drop or rise nearly as much as regular air. I would say, why not use Nitro except for cost but then again, you do own a vette.
Once again, the F1's are a great tires although I enjoy driving on the Invo's much more.

Dont go with run flats get PS2's the performance is night and day. Also they wont mess up the tire stuff. And nitrogen is better because you can run 28 PSI instead of 30 PSI (more traction) and still be safe.

PS2's are great tires, until the outside temp goes below 45 degrees. At that point, you might as well have bicycle tires on it! Cool temps + PS2's = trouble..... big trouble!

I can't imagine them being much different than any other Maximum Performance Summer-Only tire like the factory ones...

Default Zigmund, that depends...

a lot on how you intend to use the car and where you live. I live in Ohio and have an 05 Z51. The GY Supercars that it came with are great until the temperature gets below 40 degrees...these tire lose traction and can be a dangerous white knuckle experience in the snow and ice. So last year I bought a set of GY Eagle F1 AS-C and had them installed on a set of aftermarket rims (about $1700 mounted and balanced at Discount Tire) With these all-season runflats I've experienced a much, much better ride as a dd and I can drive the car pretty much year round without any concerns about the weather.

So I kept the Supercars on the lighter OEM polished aluminum rims and used them to autocross last season. They worked fine for the 5 events I did as a rookie autoxer, but now I'm looking to replace these as they are down to about 3-4/32 tread. This season, I'm going to try filling my competition tires with nitrogen....what I've heard from some pretty experienced race tire engineers is that there isn't as much of a change in your tire pressures during the racing day as you experience with tires filled with good ole air. Last season my tire pressures ranged from 30 cold to 37 hot after 3 autocross runs. I'm not sure what the advantage could be to use nitrogen on street tires - my street runflats vary 2-3 pounds depending on the outside temperature.

I've got about 10K on these new tires and I'm pretty pleased with their performance and wear so far. You may want to check these out if they fit your situation.

Good luck with your decision!

Paul

But they're no worse in that respect than the stock GY Supercars, or any other tire with comparable performance.

my stock run flats are like they're made of marble at anything under 45degrees. Not a good choice of tire to sell with the stock vette from GM if you ask me.
