I'm being told by a very reputable engine builder / tuner that there are no long tube headers available for the C6 / Z06 that don't require the removal of the cats! This was never an issue with the C5 so I just assumed that you could install long tube headers and keep the cats in place and in stock location.
Anthony, are some tuners reluctant to do that because of State and Federal laws that the replacement cats are not OEM or certified?
Fed laws does not allow the relocation of the cats. Since all long tube headers are longer than the stock man therefore the cats must be moved in order for the headers to be installed. So there is no long tube header that is acceptable for smog.
The C6 catalytic converters bolt directly to the cast iron exhaust manifold outlets. With the hood open, you can see the catalytic converters from above. Then the factory H pipe bolts to the catalytic converter and extends back to just in front of the rear axle.
The long tube headers take up the space previously occupied by the cast iron manifold and the catalytic converter. Most quality aftermarket header companies also offer an optonal H or X pipe with high flow cats.
Ahh, I get it and yes most of the reputable header manufactures do offer an X pipe with cats. So I guess some tuners are unwilling to walk that "relocate" line depending on what State they are in.
