Default map lights not going off

I know there have been threads on this before and the solution was to press the dimmer button. However, tonight, when I returned from a drive and shut the car down, the map lights did not fade out after exiting the car as they normally do. They stayed on for about 20 minutes. I have gone out and restarted the car and pressed the dimmer switch and am still getting the same results. I have made sure the switches on the mirror are off. Is there a relay that might be going bad or is this controlled by the computer and likely to reset itself after a few start/stop cycles?

may want to go for the fuse or risk a rundown battery.

The 20 minutes was the time out when the mirror switches are in the ON position. If you switch them to the other position they will fade out in under one minute. I always have to play with them as I can never remember which position is which. Between that and not knowing which position the dimmer switch is in when you push it, it can be a crap shoot.

Mine stay on 20 minutes as well. I've tried with the button in and out but still stays on 20 minutes. If anybody figures out how to get the 60 seconds I would be interested.

This is not normal. I had the same issue. Try adjusting the dash dimmer **** on the left side of the dash behind the steering wheel. Push in, I think.

Been through this. The mirror switches are up in the off position. If dimmer switch does not turn off lights, then i have no other ideas. The lights turn off in about 20 minutes because the computer automatically turns all high drain devices off to save battery.

Mine did this too. It lasted a few days then quit. It convinced me my car was possessed.

I tried the switches on the dash and mirror, with frustration, multiple times be fore it resolved.

Pretty much only 2 things can do this, either the mirror switches are in the on position or the dimmer switch was pushed and that is why they are on.
Try this: get in, start the car, are the lights still on? They should be off.
If they are still on, push the dimmer switch 1 time, did they go off? If they did, guess what.... you pushed the dimmer by mistake.

If they are still on with the car running, push 1 mirror switch and see if it goes off, if so, you know what to do. If they are still on, then a grounded wire would be my guess.

That button did the magic trick for mine. Only a few seconds now and they turn off. I had the engine running and push it so as the under dash lights went off. Apparently there is some relationship with these to the map lights. Thanks!

And thanks to Chevtech too.

The key is push-in.

Yep. And the wonderful thing is -- there is no way of telling what position that dash switch is in. Who signed off on THAT design???
