Default 2008 Engine Compartment Question

Can anyone tell me the function of the black enclosure that is immediately in front of the passenger-side of the 2008 LS3 engine? I have the 2008 shop manual set and all I can determine is that this enclosure is is connected to the air cleaner housing.

I want to mount a PCV oil catch can and they normally mount to the front passenger side of the engine block. On the '07's there is room to mount, in this location, because this enclosure is not there. Any information appreciated. Thanks.

It's an acoustic chamber to reduce intake airflow noise.

It is not a critical part and you won't miss it if you ditch it.

Here is mine mounted. I got it from Chip at CCA. I did have to do some minor modification for it to fit.

I have no experience with a catch can on my C6 but on my 02 Z28 LS1 a catch can is used to "catch" the oil that gets by the PCV valve and into the intake. As the photo shows the catch can is spliced between the PCV valve and the TB. Oil enters the top of the can and sits in the bottom. There is a petcock on the bottom of the can to easily drain any oil. The hose that enters the TB is high enough up on the side of the can that oil cannot exit the can. I assume the purpose is the same on the LS3.

See the blue cylinder in the photo...

I'm guessing that is the same purpose too. Great pic, thanks.

Is oil getting into the intake via the pcv valve somewhat of an issue on C6 cars, LS2, or LS3 engines?

Anyone?

Thanks

Do a search, you will find lots of reading. I have just over 2000 miles on the car, and have emptied the can twice. Got about 1/2 ounce out each time.
