Default Rear Tire Question?

New here first question is;
has anyone ever gone with a 285/30ZR19 instead of the 35 series in the rear?

Thanks

The diameter of the 285/30-19 tire is 25.7" and that is just too short. (The stock 285/35-19 tire is 26.9" diameter.) You can use the 305/30-19 on the rear as it is only .7" shorter.
It would be great if they would make a 315/30-19 as it would be even closer (26.4").
You can try a 325/20-19, but you are limited to the Goodyear or Bridgestone runflats and it is difficult to fit inside the fender.

Or go to a lower profile tire on front, too. For example running 255/35-18s on front and 295/30-19s on the rear would only change the front/rear ratio by 1.4%, which should work.

Why would you want less traction?

It should work; the stock sizes are right in the middle of the range for the wheels (8.5 front / 10.0 rear), and in most cases you can go +/- a tire size. Some people have done two (like the 305/30-19s that Vito.A mentioned), but that's more iffy.

Double-check the data sheets for particular tires. I have a PS2 data sheet here that specifies for the 255/35-18s a minimum 8.5 inch wheel and for the 295/30-19 size a 10 inch, so the stock wheels would be just in the range for those.

The main thing is to keep the front to rear ratio close to avoid confusing the active handling. I've heard 3% quoted as the limit, but I'm not sure if that's right or not, and I'd try to stay as close to the original ratio as possible.

This will affect your speedometer a bit, but that's easy enough to fix. Also, it will lowers your car by half an inch, and will increase the gap above the wheels by a similar amount.

Of course, if low is what you're going for you can eliminate that gap by lowering the car another half inch, which should be within the range of the factory adjusters.
