Default Question about gears

Gears often seems to be a topic of hot debate on here. I've got an MZ6 with stock gears and am pondering the pros and cons of installing 4.10's.

My question is this... is the difference between stock gears and 4.10's approximately equivalent to downshifting with stock gears? For example, if I'm driving in 5th with the stock gears and punch it, will 5th with 4.10's pull like 4th with stock gears? If so, I don't really understand the benefit of gears!

I know, I know, I'm sure this sounds like a dumb question and I apologise, but I'm just struggling to get my head around it, for some reason.

Cheers,
Ian.

More like half a gear. The difference between 4.10s and 3.42s is about 20%, where the first five gears on the Z51 are spaced about 40% apart.

Probably the major benefit (lower overall first gear) is to the drag racers, especially when used with extremely tractive rear tires.

On a road course - or a road - which is better is going to depend on the course. Or road. Unless you're doing a really fast track the 4.10s probably offer some benefit, but may mean more shifting.

Another benefit (at least to some) is that 6th becomes a "working gear" rather than just an overdrive.

Here's some charts that might make the comparison more clear. Just click the "gears" for the respective chart.
