Not sure what your issue is with the chrome ring. If you are going to use a threaded ball ****, then you are going to have to leave the chrome ring off. Just pull it out of the boot. To get it off the stock **** when taking the shifter out, just push up on the chrome ring, rotate counter clockwise and push down. Remove the screw in the drivers side of the stock **** and pull the **** straight up.

The problem is that when I separated the ring from the boot on my prior **** install an o-ring popped of the end of the boot out leaving a frayed crappy looking end of the boot. I had to go buy a larger O.D. o-ring as the one that popped out was WAY to small to put back together by hand, i.e. wrap the boot back around/over the o-ring. The boot end is wrapped around the oring then sort of snapped into a groove around the ring. Bottom line, if I remove the ring the top end of the boot looks like someone cut it with scissors and it had a much larger O.D. than any shifter shafter so it will just sag/fall down and look like poop.
It appears that the ring works with George's gripper **** from the pic he showed but I don't want to be restricted to that **** only.....and the stock **** is crap in my opinion.
I guess the only known option at this point is to get his stock shaft and re-use my Hurst ball **** that I currently have that does work with the chrome ring.
Maybe it was just me but I would thing twice about pulling the chrome ring off of the boot or you may regret it......at least I did as I had to rig it to put it back together.
Below are two pics showing the location of the dreaded o-ring if anyone is interested.

Reason: added caution statement
It works but you have to snip the tabs a little that normally twist into the groove on the stock ****. I was able to snip them enough until there was enough friction to slide it up and hold the boot up.
