I want to expand an area somewhere between 1"-2.5" long of pipe and open it about 1/8th inch. In case I'm not explaining it well, I have two 2.5 diameter pipes that I want to mate together, so I would like one of them expanded approx an 1/8th" covering a length of anywhere from 1-2.5". Can this be done and has anyone done it? I was going to pick up a pipe expander.
From: NJ..."the way I saw it, everyone takes a beating sometimes."
I believe it can be done. How much is a pipe expander? It might be cheaper and easier to stop by a local muffler shop and have them do it for you real quick. I can't see them charging much for it.
If it't free, why not give it a try? Depending how tough the pipe is, you may have to expand it a little at a time. Be sure to use some high pressure lube on the threads.
I have a manual pipe expander and IMO they're not quite beefy enough t do that kind of expansion...Great for prepping joints for a slip fit, but not much more. I've seen my local muffler guy use a power expander and they're amazing and just what you need. Spend the $10 with him and you won't regret it..
you need a pnuematic or a hydraulic swedger. You will kill yourself trying to swedge stainless with an expander....it is way too hard, not like aluminized steel. a muffler shop can do it while you wait and will likely only charge you a few bucks.
