I recently bought a 2005 with 26K from a local Chevy dealer. I didn't notice anything during the test drive (probably because I was super excited) but after living with the car for a couple weeks, I've noticed the the 1-2 shift is really hard...much harder than the C5 A4 I used to own.
Essentially, under mild acceleration it wants to shift from 1-2 at around 10mph. At that point there's almost a slight delay and then jerk into gear. Under heavier acceleration that firm shift is cool, but when cruising around town it is really annoying.
I took it back to the dealer and their service guys confirmed that it seemed hard and noted that the trans fluid was overfilled. So they drained some and reset 'something' for it to relearn. After about 100 miles, it doesn't seem to have done much.
What do you think the next step is? Am I looking at an expensive rebuild? Or, has anyone else been in a similar situation?
I would bet that the car has been tuned and was not reflashed to factory specs before it was traded in.
Take it to your local motorsports shop and have it tuned the way you want it. You might gain performance as well. From a tuner's standpoint A4's are easy to work with (I have one.)
Thanks. My first instinct was that there was something mechanically wrong, especially after the dealer confirmed the hard shift.
They agreed to give it another look on Monday. I'm assuming they can tell if the car was previously tuned? It would be good to know that before they start ripping the transmission apart!
I brought it back to the dealer and it turns out that it was a sticky valve body.
Eventhough the factory warranty is expired and I didn't purchase an extended, they are going to fix it for free. It's cool to know that there are some decent dealers out there.

Good to hear they are taking care of you. I am glad I didn't bet then
