Just a quick question... I had this pop up on my screen on two separate occasions (about a week or two apart) while my car was idling. Looking at the how the battery was charging at those moments it did fall below 13amps and accelerating a little seemed to cure the problem... Since my car has had the head and cam work done it does seem to idle a little slower and I'm wondering if this is something to be concerned about. As I said it has only come up twice and everything else seems O.K. I've got an 05 M6 with headers,hi-flow cats, x-pipe, vara ram cai, corsa sport, cartek stage 4 heads, stage 2 cam, hi-flow injectors, 160 t-stat, (I think thats it for engine mods ) Any ways, I think I read somewhere that if this happens one should change the alternator right away as it will go at any time, along with the battery. My car has less than 12K on it and I really don't beat on it ...(never tracked)
Please help I'm a little unsure what's up and would really appreciate any advice...
Thanks to all....
Thank you for the info, but I don't thtink thats my problem. When I did the H/C install at cartek they also installed a ported fast intake (forgot that) and I'm sure everything was checked. However I'll be going back to them for something else soon and will ask Dave and his crew about my code light coming up. Thanks again and, if anyone else has any advice I'm all ears...
Several months after installing my LPE 403 motor I started getting an occasional SES message. I get the message (to this day) sporadically and when I check for codes, there are none. Sometimes I drive for days without seeing the SES message and some days it pops on repeatedly.
I can find nothing wrong with my car and everything runs 5 x 5. I consider my SES message a gremlin...perhaps my tune shut something off that the ECM/PCM is requesting a response from...failing to get a proper handshake.
This is what I've discovered:
SERVICE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: This message displays if an electrical problem has occurred within the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Many systems are monitored by the Electronic Control Module (ECM). The SES light will come on when a monitored system moves out of the preset range, or when an electrical short/open in a monitored circuit occurs. There are also several "common" reasons that trigger the SES.
What you need to do is pull the trouble codes (DTC's) to determine which system(s) is causing your SES to display.
The Basics:
The SES light informs a problem has occurred requiring service; displays codes stored by the ECM to help diagnose the problem; and indicated "Open/Closed" loop operation.
The SES light comes on with the ENG ON. Once the ENG is started, SES turns OFF. If SES stays ON, a problem is detected. If the problem "goes away" SES will go OFF after ten seconds, but a CODE will store in the ECM.
SES while the ENG is running requires a Diagnostic Service Check, which exposes malfunctions otherwise not detected if other DIA's are performed prematurely. Intermittent CODES may or may not reset.
