actually i just spoke to a tech guy there, what he said was the timing chain wasn't need, that the cam gear was, but that they recommend the chain as it's a stronger unit

Get the chain, you'll be happy that you did. I just did a head/cam swap on my LS2 with 10K miles, and you could see there was already some stretching in the OEM chain. I used the IWIN Rollermaster from Scoggins - $49.99 - very cheap insurance. Make sure you also have the crank seal and 2 balancer bolts. One to mount torque the balancer, then remove it and use the 2nd one as the permanent bolt. At $14.00, more cheap insurance.
You may want to add an underdrive pulley since you have to pull the balancer anyway. Forum Vendor ByunSpeed has the Powerbond UD, belt and balancer bolt for $200 shipped.
