Strange A6 problem

Strange A6 problem
Does anyone have any experience with a problem likes this, My 06 will be driving fine then just shift down to 2nd and lock there. There is no getting it out and it only happens once in a while. The first time the car threw a code that just refered to the transmission with no specific problem. My mehanic drove the car hooked up to his laptop and could not get it to do it and said all the transmission stats were in line. If it happens and the car sits for a varied length of time it will then run fine again.
I drove the car 1500 miles and it was fine, took it out sunday and bam, it happened again.
I have not had it back to the Mech yet, he is hoping it threw a more specfic code, but at this point he can only imagine it is some sensor inside the trans that is freaking out. Just wondered if any of the forum experts had a clue. My car is pretty modded up so the dealer route is probably not an option.

I don't drive the car everyday so it is not like I am putting a bunch of strain on it. I would almost bet the next time I get in the car it will run perfect.
I was just hoping someone would have an idea before I drop the whole tranny and start taking it apart. I have read of some other issues with the A6, thought maybe someone would have some feedback.
