Default LS9 Main Bearings

Hot Rod magazine July '08 issue, page 92 shows a photo of the crankcase of the LS9. This photo shows different main caps than the LS1, LS2, LS6, LS7 and LS3. No more horizontal bolts? A 4 bolt main instead of the 6 bolt? the text claims 20% stronger in the main bearing webs and also claims ALL 6.2L (LS3?) will be upgraded to this block casting for '09.

If anybody can find a link to this article/photos I would appreciate it, I've searched and can't find a link. Thanks

EDIT; Found some better photos, check my post #3

I believe 4 bolt mains are favored for FI applications because you have a stronger cap. Making all engines the same would make sense from a production standpoint, BUT, I would not assume that future NA "LS3" blocks would have the same quality fasteners and caps that they would use in the supercharged motors, since that would be an area they could save up to $50 in production costs on.

However, this is just conjecture on my part.

Further searching found some better photos; the LS9 IS STILL a 6 BOLT Main. I wonder where the "20% stronger" comes from?

Yeah I was thinking that still had to be the case as well, I'd have found it quite odd if they would've moved away from that proven design that's served the LSX motors so well.

Looks exactly like the LS7 caps! The only way I see to make them better would be to splay them but then how would they bolt the windage tray ha ha ha.
