Anyone having this problem? When using the paddles, which I always do, the 3-2 downshift at "normal" speeds causes a momentary "free roll" and then a very hard engagement into 2nd virtually chirping the tires sometimes. This used to happen just when the transmission was cool, but is occurring more often now. Basically, it feels like pushing the clutch in on a manual where you get a free roll and then dropping the clutch once in 2nd.
This doesn't seem to happen when downshifting at higher rpms, it rev-matches properly, but just during less aggressive driving.
I also get a slippage sometimes when upshifting from 3-4 or 4-5 just between shifts. I think there was a TSB on that... checking.

As for the slippage during upshifts, there are 1 or 2 TSBs regarding this although I don't have the numbers handy. It usually means that your valve body needs replacing.
As for the downshift problem, unless you've had the car tuned and taken out the downshift Torque Management feature, it could also be a result of the valve body.

Thanks subfloor! But this is where it gets ugly. I'm actually on my 3rd valve body!! I bought the car brand new last year. At 1500 miles, the tranny stopped going into gear and shifting properly. They replaced the valve body. 100 miles later, it started happening again. They replaced the entire transmission and valve body. Of course, I'm skipping all the gory details of being out of the car for 4 weeks in my first 2 months of ownership.
Oh the humanity if I have this problem again!! I do have a tune in the car, but not much on the tranny side. I was going in tomorrow to have the tranny tuned. Maybe I should wait on that.

Is it too late to try and lemon-law the car?
Given that the car behaves differently based on the temperature, that does sound like it could be a tuning issue. There are several different scenarios that the TCM uses to decide how to shift (Normal, Performance, Hot, Hot Engine, TU/TD etc) and for each of these, there's one set for part-throttle and another for WOT so it's quite possible that they just didn't do it right.
A friend of mine with an LS3 ended up having to have his retuned by someone else after the first tuner got his transmission settings pretty messed up.
Was your car tuned with HP Tuners by any chance? If it was, I have my own and could take a look at your tune if you can get your hands on it and e-mail it to me.

Thanks for the offer! I was mistaken, my appt is actually today with my tuner shop, so they'll be looking at it. If you're still willing to double-check, pm me your email and I'll send it along. Very kind of you sir!

The shop might be hesitant to give a copy of the tune but if they do give you a copy of it, it's usually between 2 and 3 MB so it should e-mail easily.
