Long story short, took the car up to Ohio from NC for the 4th of July. I was in Ohio and needed to use the cruise control because of all the cops. I went to pass another car while I was in S mode (paddle shift not activated) with the cruise control on and the car would not down shift like it normally did when I floored it.
I waited a couple of seconds and tried it again...nothing...it stayed in sixth gear.
Waited a couple more seconds and floored it again and it downshifted that time. It has not done this before and have not had it reoccur with me since.
I also let my brother drive the car and it happened to him, he was going about 35 mph and punched it, it did not down shift....
Anyone ever have this happen? Something I should take to the dealer to check out?
Matter of fact, cruising at lower speeds like the 35 you mentioned, I can just tap the throttle and downshift the trans with my foot. For example, I'm going up a hill, and I want a lower gear, I just tap the gas and it will downshift to a lower gear right away.
Unless traction control is causing yours not to downshift when you floor it, you may need to have that looked at. Either a sensor is holding it up, or something may be in need of adjustment.
What happens in "D"? What happens with traction controll turned off? Just some thoughts.
You may have a throttle position sensor not reading correctly. Not sure if our cars actually have one, based on the electronic throttle, however, what ever is used to send the signal to the ECM may be at fault.
Thanks for the input.... It only happened to me once, so I'm not concerned yet. Normally the car shifts immediately to a lower gear at part throttle and drops two gears if I mash the throttle on the highway.
I thought it might be because of the cruise control, but was not able to duplicate it.....???
If your HUD showed 6th gear then you were in S manual mode, the car will not downshift, you must manually downshift to accelerate. Try taking your car out and leave the car in D mode then hit the throttle it should go two gears down and really plant you back in your seat. If it doesn't then you do have a problem with the trans module.
Keep us updated on this as I have not had a problem with the downshifting.

Thanks for your input, but re-read my initial post. I was in S mode AND the paddles were NOT activiated.
mine did something very similar at 1,000 miles about a year ago. now i'm at 2,600 and have never experienced the problem again. just a bmc fart i guess.

Thanks everyone for their input... My car isn't a daily, so I'll have to wait to see if it happens again.
I thought it might have something to do with the long trip to Ohio....8 hours without any time to cool down???
