I hope you heard them wrong....$1,500.00 for stock brake pads.
I use slightly more aggressive Performance Friction Z-compound pads. They're no where close to $1,500.00.
For stock pads check on line with www.gmpartshouse.com. Many forum vendors carry brake pads. Doug Rippie has an excellent selection of brake parts and upgrades.
Not sure what car you've got, but I wanted something about as good as the Z51 pads and with a little less dust. The recommendation made by a local owner was the Porterfield R4S (CF vendor). I've got them. They seem quite good to me.
My suggestion is do a search on CF C6 re brakes. Some squeak, some dust a lot, some don't quite stop as well, etc. The Porterfields weren't inexpensive, but they weren't 1500 either. I've usually felt that if you can stop your car 5-10 feet shorter, it really is a big "savings." If you think about it, you'll probably agree. There are some maximum stop pads out there but they may be too much for street usage.
I just put the AC Delco Durastop ceramics on last weekend. I can't tell a bit of difference from the stock pads stopping wise, but the reason I got them is for less dust. Huge improvement there. I've heard about corrosion problems on chrome rims and the metallic brake dust is corrosive. Got mine from Gene Culley; great price and great service.
A lot of members have reported quite noticable fade when going from the Z51 pads to the ceramics, just keep that in mind. I don't know what your driving style is, or if you're coming from Z51 pads now, but if you get aggressive behind the wheel it might not be the best route.
These pads were designed for low dust and low noise. They do work and provide OEM braking with lots of less dust and noise.
You won't go wrong with these.
FWIW... maybe you guys know or don't... but all the Durastop pads, like these, have a one time free replacement. Just go to the local dealer with the original receipt and you get a free set... but only once.
