I just bought an '08 Z06 from a private party in Phoenix, Az. I checked with the DMV prior to purchasing the car and AAA, who I am insured with. Even though the car is an '08 and is 50 state compliant, because ownership is changing it must be smogged. And they must inspect the car since it's a "high performance"car.
I took it to a shop that does smog testing and he had a heck of a time trying to get the idle reading on his equipment. He was trying to use some sort of figure-8 inductive thingy to pick up the idle reading. Because there are so many electrical items on the car he couldn't find a good source. I told him to just use an inductive clip on the number 1 cylinder. He told me that because the car has 8 separate coils the reading would be wrong, so he continued for another 15 minutes using the figure-8 thingy. I told him to just entertain me and just try the inductive clip, he assured me it wouldn't work, I told him, just try it. Lo and behold it worked! The car passed with flying colors. I was out in 10 minutes later.
The car runs great stock - like it was mentioned before, unless you've done some serious engine work, headers aren't really worth the pain of smogging for only 15 -25 hp -- and will you actually feel it?
I ordered mine with the CA sticker, picked it up at the museum and drove home to San Clemente CA. It was mandatory to have a smog check before I could register it. AAA did the paper work.
