Default Body Control Module

Is there any reason you cannot install a used BCM? My existing one got wet and is corroded and I want to replace it. GM shows the same part number from 05 to 08. I have located a used one and wanted to know if it's a matter of reprogramming or what. Would it be easier starting off with a new one? Thanks for any input.

The Service Manual says:
A new body control module (BCM) must be programmed with the proper RPO configurations. The BCM stores the information regarding the vehicle options and if the BCM is not properly configured with the correct RPO codes, the BCM will not control all of the features properly. The Tech 2 software will automatically prompt you with the RPOs available for the vehicle.....

Important: The following procedures must be performed:
1. BCM Setup
2. BPP Sensor Calibration
3. Program VIN.
So......whether you put in a new BCM or a used one, either way you'll need to take it to the dealer (or somebody with a Tech 2) to have the BCM reprogrammed with your RPO codes, do a BPP (Brake Pedal Position) sensor calibration, and enter your VIN.

I would think that you may need to have the Tech 2 available where you are doing the BCM replacement. I'm not sure, but the BCM controls or has an input into so many things, one of which is the Theft Deterrent System, that you may not even be able to start the car to drive it to the dealer if you just replace the BCM without programming it properly.

Good luck!

Dead on info. Got the new one and programmed, working as designed apparently.
