Default How long before installing clear bra?

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone know how long you would need to wait before putting a clear bra on a car after it had been painted at the body shop?

A friend of mine has lots of rock chips on the front of his C6 so he is going to get it repainted. He wants to put on a clear bra after the new paint and just want to know how long he needs to wait before he can have it put on.

The body shop said that he should wait 3 weeks before waxing the car but they don't know about the clear bra.

This is fresh paint not the paint from GM. I know that you can wax and clear bra a car that you just purchased because I did that on my new car but this is a respray to cover all the rock chips so the paint is still soft and setting.

I've been told by a Clear Bra installer, wait 30 days for fresh paint.

I am a ClearMask installer and recommend 30 days from the fresh paint. It needs to cure out before you apply the film to it or it could cause problems later down the road.

So any time after 30 days should be fine?

Yes. If the paint shop bakes the panels it could be sooner. But I recommend 30 days to be safe.

My Body Shop said wait 3 months or you risk the paint adhering to the film. I would wait.

I waited 3 months on both my '05 and my '08 and never, never had a problem with either one! Well, I only have the '08 since Nov.but the point is don't be in such a rush, just enjoy the car for the 3 months you're waiting and when you start applying wax after 45-60 days, just don't wax the areas where the clear bra is going to be put onto the car. Guarenteed to be a proven method!
Good Luck.

Not sure I would be able to wait 3 months unless I did it just before winter (so as to limit the amount of driving time it sees before installation).

Sadly if he drives the car at all in the time between when he gets it painted and has the clear bra installed, he risks the same fate he's already dealt with (e.g. more chips).

Just out of curiosity, what's he paying for the clear bra and the paint job respectively?

I've been quoted ~$800 for a clear bra on my C6, which is about 1.5 to 2 times what it would cost to have the nose repainted (assuming you can get it to match properly).

I wonder on a constant basis if I should have put one on, but the car already had 18k when I bought it, so there were already a few imperfections.

I believe he paid $600 for respray the front end (bumper and hood). The clear bra installation for the full coverage (front, hood, fenders, wheel wells) is about $800.

The problem with waiting 3 months is that unless you don't drive it during that time then you will get rock chips again.

I think maybe 45 days would be a good time to wait.

Talked to a few body shops and they all say 30+ days should be fine. I hope they are right.
