I am trying to convince a friend of mine NOT to use fix-a-flat on his 07 vert, for a slow leak (3 psi every few days) for which he cannot find the source. I know that it is not supposed to be good for the rim,/tire??? but found myself lost for facts as to why its bad.
Any input on what that stuff actually does and why its bad for performance cars would be appreciated!

Reason: typing mistake
Slow leak may be a loose valve stem or it may just need the tire re-seated on the rim. Fix-a-flat has stuff in it that my very well damage the sensor. It is, afterall, a SEALANT.
I wouldn't trust a product that doesn't do what it claims.. Fix-A-Flat??? No more like slow it down, it doesn't repair anything.... We have seen it eat chrome off aluminum wheels, it gunks up the tps sensor, also not to mention you have a liquid rolling around inside the wheel throwing off the balance... WHY O WHY would you skimp and use fix a flat on a vette??? unless of course your running a z06 and it's an emergancy ect...
btw the hard to find leak can be found.. if there isn't a puncture or an issure with the valve stem sealing.. I would check the rim for leaks, corrosion likes to happen on the sealing surface of the lip.. use soapy water and let it sit, watch for bubbles.. sometimes you can't even see a leak with just water if it is a slow one..
I have used and would only use it for emergencies, like when you dont have runflats and no spare. Always take it to a tire shop within a couple of days.
Discount tire wheel usually find the leak and fix it for free unlees its on the sidewalls.

Show your friend this paragraph on page 386 of his 2007 owner's manual.
Notice: Using liquid sealants can damage the
tire valves and tire pressure monitor sensors
in your extended mobility tires. This damage
would not be covered by warranty. Don’t
use liquid sealants in your extended mobility
tires.
When I went with non-runflats I purchased a supposedly "sensor safe" kit from Tirerack.com with a small compressor & goop in a nice little pack that fits behind my waterfall nicely.

Thats the Continental "Conti Kit" and I have one also. Fits nicely in a storage bin in back.
When I worked for Sears, we had to clean the fix-a-flat out of the tire. What a PITA and it made the inside of the tire very slick and the patches would not stick. Besides, that stuff doesn't work and the tire needs to be properly addressed.
