Default C6 automatic trans cooler

I have a 05 C6 with an automatic transmission (yea, I know, I hate that part but had to make that sacrifice for the wife to let me get it) and have started to run it on road courses. After about 15 minutes of running the car to it's potential I start to get trans temp warnings. Obviously I need to get a decent trans cooler if I want to continue doing this with this car.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a trans cooler? Any suggestions would be much appreciated such as type of cooler, location, or if I should have fans on it.

Thanks in advance.

Im running a 3200 tc in my A6, and for a while i was running 3 tranny coolers in the rear. But i located a 4th one up front right behind the brake duct cooler, took 15* avg off my tranny temps. I can get on it couple times on the road, and watch it rise to 215 then cruising normal, itll drop back down to 180s. Lowest ive seen it go is 151*

Im sure locating one behind both the ducts, and finding a way to reroute the useless brake ducts if you want. That should help quite a bit.

Think its one of the bollas mods.

There was a lot of discussion on the C-5 forum. Try a search there.

Haven't really taken a close look at where the C6 has locations to mount a cooler, but one cooler that I've been really satisfied with is the Derale Atomic-Cool w/electric fan.

I have a Vigilante 3200 stall, Hughes Performance transmission pan, TransGo HD2 shift kit, and Royal Purple fluid in my '05 GTO. Cruising down the highway in hot weather I might see 170 degrees, maybe 190 at absolute most when driving slow. Any other time I'm under 160. Trans stay pretty cool even on a hot day at the drag strip, but I've never auto-crossed it where you're constantly abusing the trans, but I'm sure this cooler would work well in that application.

The cooler's thermostat kicks the fan on at 180 degrees, but I wired a switch to my center consoler so I can manually kick the fan on while I'm at the track just to keep the trans even cooler. Hope that helps!

Just looked at some of those and those look like they would work very well. Now I just have to figure out where the best place would be to mount one.

I bought a B&M Super Cooler (with the fan) after purchasing my Yank 3600 a few weeks back. I tried installing it in front of my condensor but the Vararam intake got in the way if I left the trans cooler fan attached. I ended up saying "what the heck" and installed it there anyway but without the fan.

Although my engine runs a little hotter now, I haven't seen my trans temps go up past 155 even if I'm running at the drags.

Hope that helps,
Christopher

Default Trans Cooler mounting

To All:

Has any one thought about mounting the cooler in the rear between the mufflers? Probably impossible with stock mufflers, but with smaller aftermarket ones I have 9" between the mufflers and at least 16" in length to mount a cooler. You would have to fabricate a bracket, but it could be mounted to the rear cross frame member, angled down slightly(say 20*) to the differential frame. Cooler lines would be close to the trans, you would only need 12 volts for the fan. Derale makes one about 7 1/2" X 12"(Summit # DER-15830), looks like it might work. Fan would be most helpful when the car isn't moving, otherwise there should be enough air when in motion.

How easy is it to tap into the stock transmission lines to add a cooler?

What I did with mine was pull out the stock lines from the radiator and put large rubber hoses (can't remember the exact size) over them with clamps. This prevents you from having to cut anything and if need be, I can reinstall the lines back into the radiator in less than 5 minutes.

I own a C5 with A4. I bought the B & M Super Cooler and it does real well even on the road course. I installed in line with the radiator according to the instructions. I may go ahead and plumb it again so the transmission fluid skips the radiator and goes straight to the cooler to see how that works. Good luck.

I think Dennis has one offset on the pass. side to avoid the vararam interferance. I may be wrong, maybe he'll chime in.

Hey rcknusa,

What model/size B&M SuperCooler did you buy and where did you mount it? Did you need anything extra besides the install kit that comes with the cooler?

Thanks
